China issues warning to EU Commission over electric vehicle probe

China has warned the EU Commission that an investigation into electric vehicles could damage business relations and increase prices for European car buyers.

China has warned that the EU Commission's launch of anti-subsidy probe into Chinese electric vehicles could harm bilateral trade and raise prices of European Consumers.

The investigation was announced by Commission President Ursula von der Leyen during her State of the Union address to parliament on Wednesday.

She also said Brussels would launch a probe into what she said were the "huge state subsidies" allowing China to flood the European market with cheap electric cars, opening a new front in the battle to lead the new green economy and promised that Europe's green energy transition would be "fair and just" for farmers and businesses.

In response, China's EU Chamber of Commerce urged Brussels to think again. In a statement, it urged the Commission not to resort to what it called "unilateral trade tools to block China's EVs in the EU and raise their costs."

China is extensively subsidizing its electric cars in order to penetrate the European market. This distorts trade because EU countries are prohibited from subsidizing the vehicles produced in their countries. In order to protect European vehicle manufacturers and secure jobs, it would be justified to impose a higher import customs duty on Chinese cars that compensates for the Chinese subsidies . This would make Chinese electric cars more expensive in Europe, but they would still be cheaper than European ones. However, car buyers would then be more likely to choose BMW, VW, Renault or FIAT.

I must admit, I find it quite puzzling that the EU isn't offering more support to its manufacturers. It's almost as if they're charging their electric car ambitions without a spark of enthusiasm! Let's hope they plug into a greener future soon and charge ahead to make the world a better place.

Yet again China's "wolf warrior" attitude to frighten other countries. What does it matter to China if EU decides to stop Chinese import that may harm their own industry? China's game plan is no different to their new map claiming northern India and south east Russia including Philippines. One of our lawyers working in conveyancing in Australia told me that any documents provided by China Chinese have to be subject to intense scrutiny because they tend to provide false documentation to facilitate property purchases. His own people the Jaffna Tamils prefer to live in whiteman countries than in our own bountiful paradise

@Sivakumar, if westerners are so bad why have over 115,000 people have arrived from Africa ie mainly Muslim Mali, Gambia, Senegal, etc illegally to Italian lampadusa island since January this year wanting to live in Kuffar infidel disbeliever Christian whitemans countries, just like many of our Tamils now living in whiteman countries
