Civil Defense personnel arrested for shooting at elephant at Mahiyangana Rajamaha Viharaya perahera

An officer from the Civil Defense Department at the Mapakada Wewa Wildlife Regional Office has been arrested following an incident in which an elephant named "Sita" was shot at during the Mahiyangana Rajamaha Viharaya's Randoli Perahera.

The incident occurred early this morning (30) at around 03.30 am.

According to the police, the elephant was mistakenly shot at under the belief that it was a wild elephant.

The arrested suspect is scheduled to be produced before the Mahiyangana Magistrate's Court.

This should be the first step. More effective action should follow. The statement made by the Department of Wildlife Conservation that rubber bullets were used cannot be believed. If they were, they would have been made with some special kind of rubber as hard at steel. When these trigger happy officials are given a gun, they think that they could fire at will. Besides, were other methods not available to deal with this type of situation.

Death sentence to be meted out to this uncouth, barbaric, sadist and let there be the most stringent of laws imposed to protect our elephants (wild and domesticated) as well as our dogs (stray and domesticated). A totally uncivilised country this is.
