Colombo, Dec.20 (Daily Mirror) - When choosing air hostesses for SriLankan Airlines, candidates should have clear facial skin and an unblemished midriff, especially visible when wearing a saree. Additionally, proficiency in English is essential to comprehending the needs of air passengers, Aviation Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva said.
SriLankan Airlines held a series of interviews to select air hostesses following an advertisement. Nearly 6,000 applicants were received for the interview, but only 196 individuals were selected.
"SriLankan Airlines upheld a stringent standard, and despite the majority of candidates presenting themselves with impressive qualifications, a significant number faced rejection on account of even a single facial pimple. Others were turned away due to visible marks on the midriff when wearing a saree. Subsequently, some distressed individuals lodged complaints with the Ministry, asserting that they were dismissed for minor imperfections such as a small pimple or visible marks," the Minister said.
In response to these challenges, Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva offered guidance to aspiring candidates interested in joining SriLankan Airlines. He advised prospective female applicants to take measures to prevent the occurrence of pimples and marks on their faces, emphasizing the importance of maintaining their aesthetic appeal.
A significant number of candidates prioritize their appearance before attending interviews, recognizing the importance of maintaining beauty standards. Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva suggested that the emphasis on personal grooming and beauty maintenance should ideally begin in childhood. Regrettably, many candidates did not adopt this practice, potentially limiting the selection of air hostesses from rural areas had such habits been more widespread.
Simultaneously, the minister highlighted the significance of possessing strong English language proficiency. During the interviews, a substantial number of candidates faced failure due to inadequate communication skills. The minister said that effective communication is crucial for air hostesses, as they are required to interact with air passengers and understand their needs. Without proficient communication skills, success in this role would be compromised.
Individuals aspiring to become air hostesses, aircraft engineers, or pilots should prioritize acquiring strong English language skills. Recognizing the importance of English proficiency early on, candidates can take proactive steps to enhance their language abilities by participating in tuition classes and other relevant educational opportunities.
While airlines in many countries contribute between 20 and 30 percent to their national economies, Sri Lanka's airlines historically make a comparatively smaller contribution due to the country's size. Despite this, there are opportunities to implement measures that can expand this contribution and generate more income for the nation, Minister de Silva added.

Yeah, because people have the power to stop pimples from coming. No matter how much personal grooming and skin care you do, a pimple or two is inevitable at one point or the other. Can't expect any better when idiots are given ministerial posts

First and foremost get rid of the ridiculous saree the stewardess wear. The jackets are too high up and it shows too much of the midriff. Should be more modest and flattering for the Sri Lankan structure. Under arm sweat patch is always visible on the jacket.

No no nooo! The saree is pure Sri Lanka traditional dress for females. It’s the most decent (revealing most of whatever that’s there) dress ever!

There is literally no hope for Sri-Lanka. Disgusted. He has all the time in the world to talk about this. What does he know about choosing an air hostess? A potential good candidate could have been rejected because of a pimple.. Disgusting, this shows the IQ level of Sri-Lankan parliamentarians. Won't see anymore I am proud to be a Sri-Lankan on three wheelers in another 10 years at this rate.

After touch down on of her colleges woke her up. Then I thought to myself , if it was an emergency landing how could she reacted. It was and is my last Sri Lankan flight

I am retired cabin crew. Yeah, it's a tough, competitive job. Not only the interview passing, but then the 6 week of training which is stressful beyond belief. We started with 35 in our class, but only 14 of us graduated. The instructors watch every move you make and throw alot of pressure on you to weed out the "weak ones". They want to see who can handle the pressure. There were 36 exams and you had to obtain a minimum of 90% or it was bye bye. Every airline receives thousands and thousands of applications for a small amount of openings. And although we might agree that a pimple is a ridiculous reason to not be accepted, these airlines call the shots and will only take the "cream of the crop". The minister who made these statements is simply a messenger. So ladies, it is what it is.

It's not 1870. This Minister needs to be removed. The airline should be sold to a real non-sexist country. The airhostess's should be given something comfortable to wear not something to give the passengers something to look at. I shan't fly Sri Lankan again, kind of glad this gives me an excuse not to to be honest, they are rubbish.

Seems it's easier to pass the civil service exams... If only cream of cream is selected then lanka airlines would have been cream of cream among airlines... If airlines load the crew with unnecessary pressure churn would be high and great loss to the airlines due to training and retraining cost... Get your view literally minister about midriff particularly and all will be ok with the pilot cabin crew and airline

What has the stupid Minister of Transport to say about the Selection Criteria for air hostesses? This is strictly in the purview of the Airline and its management. Political meddling of this sort is the very reason why our airline is such a failure. Will the grade 5 passed politicians keep to their side of the fence and allow a free hand for the airline staff to manage as they are required to?

I have been a frequent air traveller. The minister is RIGHT on one aspect. People are slandering him here for stupid reasons. One thing that stands out prominently in Sri Lankan airlines in comparison when you enter other planes is our girls are not up to the required beauty. Mark mates, this is a competitive business, like if you want to be an actress you have to be beautiful

Beauty is always in the eye of the beholder!!! During my over fifty flights with different airlines, I was able to notice again and again the beauty, charm and loveliness of the Sri Lankan stewardesses, their elegance of movement, their friendliness and their ability to speak English!!! This means they outperform stewardesses from other airlines! It is downright ridiculous to make a pimple on the face or a spot on the stomach area of any importance when selecting a flight crew!!! In most cases, the Sri Lankan woman has an impressive beauty combined with naturalness, which is often missing from European flight attendants!!!

Another example of how idiotic Sri Lankan politicians are and the people for putting up with them. Visual appeal should be the last on the list and it's sad that a third world country making this the top priority. The world needs competent, smart and kind people to take care of air travellers. Sad to see once great Sri Lankan Airlines aspiring to be like Hooters Air. I used to exclusively fly Sri Lankan and that changed about ten years ago. Raise our standards and open our doors to the world (The whole political corruption and mismanagement is a separate issue that needs to be addressed first). I was recently on a flight where the captain announced that 28 languages were spoken by the flight crew! Amazing. I did not notice any particularly attractive crew, but the way they care about the wellbeing of the passengers was impeccable.

ridiculous qualifications Wednesday, 20 December 2023 06:10 PM
I thought this was all about recruiting Air Hostesses!! I think he has diverted while hallucinating. What on earth has a pimple, mark on the face and or an unblemished midriff got to do with seeking employment as an Air Hostess? Passengers expect excellent inflight service, communication skills, pleasing personality, problem solving, handling pressure, fluency in English, empathy and unless applicants have had a good education it is next to impossible to get a place for training, leave alone being selected for employment. One cannot expect someone raw from the village to be able to qualify in 6 weeks of training, as I would imagine the 6 weeks is training to do with on-the-job descriptions of work responsibilities and the likes. I doubt majority of passengers even glance at their midriffs, as communication is usually face to face/eye to eye, not eye to midriff. Majority of people who apply for these vacancies would be those who see this as an opportunity to travel and see the world.

Beauty Is But Skin Deep Wednesday, 20 December 2023 08:54 PM
Frequent Air Traveller, what a load of crap. I too have been a Frequent Air Traveller I DO NOT LOOK FOR BEAUTY when entering a plane nor look for it inside a plane. Who the hell enters a plane to look at beauty, they do so to get to their destination. All they need is a WELCOME at the entrance and GOODBYE at the exit. Passengers keep themselves occupied by reading, watching an in-house movie, business passengers will have their own stuff to do accordingly, while some may sleep during flying hours and request to be woken up for meals etc.

Air hostess should be chosen for her skills in passengerservice. Not on the basis of her body and skin. It's inhuman and it shows the evil nature of the management. They should be taken to court for this behavior. Look at American airlines and British airlines where even senior ladies are appointed to serve as hostesses. Wh y not apply this rule for women MPs in parliament.
