Colombo Chief Magistrate Thilina Gamage has requested the Secretary of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) to appoint another Magistrate for the case involving former Provincial Council member Salochana Gamage, who was arrested in connection with a bribery case, as the suspect is his brother.
In a letter sent to the Judicial Service Commission today, Chief Magistrate Thilina Gamage stated that the magisterial inquiry into the bribery matter had been assigned to the Colombo Chief Magistrate. He emphasised that it would not be appropriate for him to preside over the case.
Furthermore, the Chief Magistrate clarified that neither the Chief Magistrate's Court nor he personally had any involvement in the incident.
Former Western Provincial Council member Salochana Gamage and another individual were arrested by the Bribery Commission while allegedly accepting a bribe and they were ordered to be remanded till January 6, 2025, by a Colombo Additional Magistrate.
Salochana Gamage and another businessman were arrested in Pitakotte by the Bribery Commission over a Rs. 9 million bribery incident.
The bribe was reportedly given in exchange for speeding up compensation for a piece of land owned by a relative of the complainant. The land had been acquired by the Urban Development Authority.
