Constitutional Council rejects AG's extension again

Colombo, June 26 (Daily Mirror) - The Constitutional Council has again rejected President Ranil Wickremesinghe's proposal to extend Attorney General Sanjay Rajaratnam's term by six months.

In a recent vote, five members opposed the extension while three supported it.

This is the second time the Council has denied the President's request to extend Rajaratnam's tenure. The first rejection occurred in June, demonstrating a consistent stance among the majority of Council members against the extension.

What are their reasons for rejecting the extension? Do they have their preferred candidate? In that case , what is the use of their existence? I think that this council should be abolished if they are trying to play politics.

Why is Ranil so hard on retaining the present AG in Service. His need must be examined. In my mind he wants to appoint him as CJ when the CJ retires. Ranil might send it again to the CC and try to bribe a member. Then Speaker can cast his vote

Dear President RW. In the original proposal for a constitutional council your team had a less politically appointed composition and all on merit and credentials. However during the approval process the Rajapakse lead teams with support of others wanted the nominees to come from the govt (PM), president, opposition etc and made the process partially politicized and thus spoiled the intentions of the establishment of a CC. Now please stop manipulating and messing with it and abide by their decision to ensure we respect the objectives of setting up a CC.

If as you say the CC is partially politicized then is that the reason for the 5 : 3 decision on the present AG's extension? We, the public need to know whether the ones who are approving his extension are the good ones or the bad ones!
