Controversial remarks on Buddhism: Natasha released from case



Colombo, June 19 (Daily Mirror) -  Stand-up comedian Natasha Edirisooriya was today ordered to be released from the magisterial inquiry by the Colombo Fort Magistrate's Court upon the Attorney General's advice.

The CID arrested comedian Natasha Edirisooriya for allegedly making comments on Buddhism, detrimental to the country's religious harmony.

An order delivered by the Colombo High Court on July 6, 2023 observed that the alleged statement said to have been made by Natasha Edirisooriya does not, on the face of it (ex-facie) come under Section 3(1) of the ICCPR for advocating national, racial or religious hatred that constitutes incitement to hostility or violence.

She was granted bail accordingly.
