Court fines 15 motorcyclists for dangerous riding on money bets in Bambalapitiya

Colombo, May 13 (Daily Mirror) - Fifteen motorcyclists involved in dangerous riding for money bets on the Galle Road in Bambalapitiya, Colombo were fined Rs. 427,500 and had their driving licenses suspended for six months by the Colombo Traffic Court today.

The Bambalapitiya Police arrested these motorcyclists early morning on May 5 and released them on police bail after processing at the police station. The suspects, aged between 20 and 28, are residents of Colombo and its surrounding areas.

Following their arrest, the motorcycles were inspected for any defects by a vehicle inspector.

Subsequently, the suspects were produced before the Colombo Traffic Court, where they were fined.

"This isn't the first time these riders have faced legal action. They have been arrested previously and fined for dangerous riding, with the court consistently ordering them to pay fines," a senior police officer said.

The Bambalapitiya Police are conducting further investigations.

Impound all illegal racers of their vehicles - all types. This menace needs to be stopped as it’s so dangerous and lives (both innocent people and the racers) can be lost or seriously injured. It’s also disturbing the public of their sleeping. Don’t wait till a love one of yours gets killed before taking drastic actions.

Should be given the maximum fine with jail for default payment. Until the fine paid cannot leave court so pay the big fine or serve the term

Good work by the police and the judiciary for a change. This rowdy behavior requires a jail time at least for 6 months plus hefty fines for repeat offenders.

Repeat offenders have utter disregard for the law and authority. Licenses suspended for 6 months is fair game. The bikes too should have been confiscated. One day they will look back and be thankful that police perhaps saved them from a tragedy waiting to happen.

All people blame to innocent youth. This is their playing time. No facility for tgem to play their hobbies. This is govt fault. Govt must have designed and allocated racing circut to youth who love racing for hourly or monthly fees. Then both people are safe.

Because you youths seems “Entitled” to everything whenever anything benefits you. Are any one of you racing in-front of your homes? I think not bcoz your grandparents, parents and family member need their sleep. But it ok to go to other neighbourhoods to disturb the peace.
