Fort Magistrate Ranga Dissanayake today directed the CID to file a summary of evidence on the next hearing as to ascertain whether there is sufficient evidence against former DIG Nalaka de Silva over the alleged assassination plot of VIPs.
At the onset, Deputy Solicitor General Dileepa Peiris, appearing for the prosecution, said there is enough circumstantial evidence to suggest the involvement of the former DIG over the assassination plot based on the information received from Namal Kumara.
He said there are 123 recordings relating to the meetings between former DIG and Namal Kumara, which happened secretly and away from his office.
He advised about an incident where a famous singer had visited the former DIG when he was in charge of the Terrorist Investigation Department (TID).
He said when the singer attempted to meet the DIG, a police officer at the TID had questioned him about the visit and subsequently that police officer was transferred.
Pointing out Namal Kumara's allegations against the former DIG that he had links with Makandure Madush, the DSG said when Madush was arrested and remanded for 18 months under TID in 2011, the Director of the TID was the second suspect.
He said on the last occasion, the CID had informed court that there was no sufficient evidence to prove the involvement of the former DIG into the assassination of the President or former defence secretary. He also questioned the different positions of the DSG and the CID over the evidence.
Considering the request, the Fort Magistrate directed the CID to submit summary of evidence against the suspect to ascertain whether there is enough evidence to keep former DIG in remand custody over the allegations. Former DIG Nalaka de Silva was re-remanded till March 19, 2019. (Shehan Chamika Silva)
