Customs seize Rs.43 Mn worth psychedelic drugs from Europe at CME

Colombo (Daily Mirror) - The Sri Lanka Customs at the Central Mail Exchange (CME) seized multiple consignments containing psychedelic drugs worth over Rs. 43 million, sent from European countries addressed to bogus recipients in Sri Lanka.

Customs Narcotics Control Unit officials following a special surveillance inside the CME detected 25 parcels sent from Germany and the United Kingdom during the weekend and found a variety of narcotics.

The parcels contained the Cannabis variety of ‘Kush’ weighing 1.74 Kgs, Methamphetamine drug contained 2,193 tablets of Ecstasy and 29 grams of Amphetamine drug varieties.

Customs Spokesman Senior Director Seevali Arukgoda said the parcels had been addressed to recipients in Colombo, Battaramulla, Maharagama, Boralesgamuwa, Panadura, Moratuwa and Kandy but all those were found to be fake addresses.

The Customs officials with the CME’s Postal Department officials carried out the inquiries and the contraband was to be handed over to the Police Narcotic Bureau (PNB).

Just today the minister of justice said that drugs that were seized and kept as evidence was found to contain wheat flour and other items. This is the same thing that is happening to hundreds of kilos of drugs seized will contain talcum powder and other substances when it comes to the case. With today's technology the contraband could be videoed and destroyed immediately.

For these parcels there must have been some arrangement about delivery/collection. If they are allowed the collect that way at least one of the recipients could be caught. The issue is moment the items are seized for investigation the information reaches the recipients

I commend customs for saving the minds of many a youth from these deadly drugs .but please incinerate them as fast as you can for that street value may tempt some unscrupulous officials to sneak some out to the market.

What is the use of all these detections when it is found that what is received by State Agencies like Government Analyst, or Court Record rooms , the products are replaced and what remains are harmless wheat flour or talcum powder ? The culprits involved are not detected !

Seized, seized but what is happening.to every thing that is seized. They turn out to be wheat flower, rice flower or saw dust at the time of hearing the case. What a stupid way of misleading the public. Do you thinks we have horns.

this appears to be a daily occurance and rumour has it that there is connivance by officers of both institutions with supplier and recipient. a complete overhauling of the depts from top to bottom is the cure
