Colombo, July 24 (Daily Mirror) - The Department of Motor Traffic has requested the public to inform of their purchased new vehicle details immediately through WhatsApp.
Addressing the media, Commissioner General Nishantha Anuruddha Weerasinghe said that both the buyer and seller must inform the Department of Motor Traffic (DMT) on the transfer of vehicles.
To facilitate this process, the DMT has introduced a WhatsApp number (0768833300) for immediate notification of vehicle details.
The seller must notify the DMT through the Vehicle Ownership Transfer Board, and the buyer must transfer the vehicle's ownership to their name within 14 days of purchase. It is the responsibility of both parties to inform the DMT about the ownership change.
"People have faced many difficulties when using vehicles without transferring their ownerships. Accordingly, the DMT will impose a fine for not changing the vehicle ownership within 14 days. After 14 days, a fee of Rs. 100 will be charged. For buses, lorries, vans or cars, while the fine can reach up to Rs. 100,000, and for three-wheelers and motorcycles, up to Rs. 50,000," the Commissioner General said.
