Colombo, June 21 (Daily Mirror) - The ‘Association of Veterinarians for Humane Management of Animal Population’ will launch a dansala for stray dogs, donkeys and monkeys living on Mannar Island today, in observance of Poson Poya.

They noted that many dogs, donkeys and monkeys have been abandoned on Mannar Island without food.

The event will also involve the participation of Vets for Future, One Meal, Million Lives, Bridging Lanka and Hendro Animal Rescue organizations.

A good noble deed. Wish this is replicated in all parts of Sri Lanka. If nothing else, the planning and execution of such humane acts promotes and enriches the mind which leads to a better living, tolerance and prosperity.

Being humane to all creatures is running in our peoples' blood. At the same time, Vet doctors should come forward to treat stray animals injured in road accidents.

There's no need to have a dansala for these poor dogs, only for the show and only on poson! Instead, please don't ill treat them on a daily basis by throwing stones and sticks, not forgetting throwing boiling water, engine oil and other disgusting things at them! And yet here we boast of the land of the Buddha and "sathva karunawa" (kindness to animals!)

Why not use the money to build shelters for them so that they have a place to live and humans are saved from rabies and agonizing deaths.

Please make sure people are fed too and helped year round. The value of human life and a person's dignity is immeasurable. Do not give more importance to stray animals when poor children in these areas have no food to eat.

Whilst this is a noble act in providing food to these stray animals. However, do not confine this act of providing food only on ONE DAY to show your generosity and getting publicity. As an animal lover this should be done through a collective approach in providing food on a daily basis as these acts will only satisfy the pangs of hunger of these animals. If initiatives are taken there are many who will subscribe to these efforts at grassroot levels!!!!!!
