*Investigations reveal that this is not the first time he has faced disciplinary charges
* Danushka has faced at least three allegations of misconduct on females
Sri Lankan citizens woke to shocking news last morning of a national cricketer facing allegations of sexual assault in Australia during the T20 World Cup. The allegations which have rocked the cricketing world has also brought much disgrace to Sri Lanka Cricket, which continued with Danushka's selection despite the cricketer facing an alleged dark past.
Danushka is no stranger to cricket-loving citizens. Although the country expected to see his performance on the field, the cricketer had allegedly other plans brewing. According to a statement given by Deputy Superintendant Jane Doherty, Australia's Sex Crimes Squad Commander, which was played on Australian media, Danushka had met a female on the dating app 'Tinder and the two had been chatting for weeks. Last Wednesday night the two had for the first time met at the Opera bar in Sydney although Danushka was well aware he had a commitment with the national cricket team. The couple had decided to return to the female's house in Rosebay for consensual sex, but when the victim had allegedly requested Danushka to wear a condom he had refused. When asked, the cricketer allegedly choked his 29-year-old victim after arguments and sexually assaulted her.
The Australian police nabbed Danushka on Saturday night just as the team was preparing to leave Australia on an early morning flight to return back home. He was produced before an Australian court yesterday, where his bail was rejected.
Investigations here have revealed that this is not the first time that Danushka has faced disciplinary charges. Sources within the SLC told Daily Mirror yesterday that within the past two years, Danushka has faced at least three allegations of misconduct on females and one incident of misbehaviour where he along with two other players broke the bio bubble during a tour in England.
Sources said that within the past two years, Danushka had faced two complaints down south for allegedly harassing women, one which included him allegedly visiting a nightclub/hotel in Mirissa where he made advances on a female and the victim had moved away after slapping the cricketer on the face.
In 2018, SLC slapped a six-match ban on the batsman for breaching player rules as police investigated the alleged rape of a Norwegian woman in his hotel room in Kollupitiya.
Danushka was questioned by police after his associate Sandeep Jude Selliah was accused of raping one of two Norwegian women with them in a room at the team hotel.
Police said Danushka was not an accused, but a cricket board hearing found him guilty of breaching team discipline and violating his contract.
SLC rules stipulate that during matches, players must be in their hotel rooms by midnight and cannot have guests.
This incident in 2018 was just months after he faced another disciplinary inquiry in October 2017, where he missed a training session following late-night partying.
Even during the England tour in 2021, where he, Niroshan Dickwella and Kusal Mendis faced a one-year ban after a bio bubble breach during the COVID-19, Danushka and the rest of the two players were cleared in a year and taken back into the team.
With Danushka already having such a troubled past to which he was cleared, a serious question now arises as to why the selection committee of Sri Lanka Cricket continuously kept such a player on the national cricket team even as a backup player.
Sources in the sports industry said that a player with so many allegations should have faced a ban for life but questions now arise as to why Danushka was continuously selected and even sent for tours.
Soon after the sexual assault allegations against Danushka went viral yesterday Sri Lanka Cricket was quick to release a statement stating that it had initiated a thorough inquiry into the matter and said it will take stern action against the player if found guilty.
“SLC will closely monitor the proceedings in court and, in consultation with the ICC, will expeditiously initiate a thorough inquiry into the matter and take stern action against the cricketer, if found guilty,” the SLC said. (JAMILA HUSAIN)

If convicted he is guilty of two crimes. First is rape, for which he will get at least 8 years in an Australian jail. But for the second, bringing disrepute to SL, he has to do at least 10 years in Welikada upon completion of his Australian sentence. But if the current criminal politicians are still there, he will be offered a cabinet position.

Can't understand why SLC is having controversial players in the team.SL has to choose best players in district level.SLC shouldn't be politicised.Players join Politicians to bring disrepute to SL

He is kept in the squad since even the SLC is full of such criminals and everyone is covering each other. Only country in the world where a loved sports have taken a reverse gear since victory ✌️ that shows the calibere of officials and ppl involved with the sports. Also there is lots of curse with the sports.... Everyone country allows all community to represent their national team...if they are talented. Here it's only one race no others are given equal opportunity. Once in a blue moon they give one player from another race to participate that too without much persistance. Murali was an exception since he was super natural!!!! If u want to everyone to love the sports and create a positive vibe... Unite everyone ... If not this sports will never ever develop!! Period!

No, the girl came willingly and wanted safe act our guy went mad after seeing the woman naked and forgot the world around him. So he probably did it by force and the woman complained. The woman could have also complained even if he did it right. So best thing yo stay away from such temptations.

They chatted, had drinks in the bar, and then went her house to “do it” . But at the house he refused to wear condom and so she refused. But he went ahead without permission. It is wrong but it is different from rape. I feel sorry for the guy.

You need to be careful with these women as they can even accuse of rape after consensual act. These women do this quite often with public figures so they get good story to be published as well as they can get some good compensation. For Dhanushka , I thunk he picked the wrong woman. He was picking on many and the got stuck when he tried it with the wrong woman.

"Went ahead without permission" is rape. Even if a naked female is sitting on your lap, if you force her to have sex, that is rape. Even if she said yes first but then said no and told you to stop and you go on, that is rape. If she is drunk and you go ahead and have sex without her affirmative coherent consent, it is also rape. Please get educated. The mindset and entitlement of the people in these comments is just scary. schools need to do a better job of educating men on consent. There a video called TEA CONSENT which will explain this very important concept in a simple fashion- some of it might surprise you!

Charges must be levelled against the team manager and selectors for unethical favouritism toward one player and glaring neglect of potential risks. This bloke was injured weeks ago and didn't have the form to deserve a place as a backup player, but they still kept this uncontrollable offender in Australia.

With cricket being the most boring sport out there, this player who has his brain in his dick was in need of some variety. But anyway, why hasn't he been behind bars for a long time because of his past crimes? Probably because sex crimes against women and children in Sri Lanka still don't get the attention they deserve. Politicians and VIPs always get away with this. Only if such a crook of the so-called Sri Lankan high society commits such a crime abroad he finally ends up in the nick.

The whole management is weak and cannot take a correct stand on anything. Apparently there were many parties and a total of 16 of which only 6 were approved ones. Clearly shows the manager and senior staff have no control over these over hyped players.

If cricketer can't win they money will be less. Dhanushka was repeatedly vital for our team's overall capability. Sportsman only last a few years, they don't have a career actually playing sport after forty. Winning and doing better than others is only way to ensure high incomes. You're getting confused with marketing business talking about brand ambassador losing focus on why sportsman play high income getting sport.

SLC has never been interested in even maintaining standard of Sri Lankan cricket leave along improving it. Firstly, it increased the number of First Division teams to 22 just to get votes from clubs during election when all other cricket playing countries have very few teams First Division teams usually between 6-12. Although SLC get a massive amount of income from TV rights etc., it never spent money in constructing large cricket grounds with fast wickets and it did not set up a Cricket Academy. The President Ranil Wickremasinghe must dissolve the SLC and have a fair election for SLC under a revised constitution.

Fire all players and any employees who misbehave and creates problems for men or women. This is found mostly among Youth. The Maha Sangha must spend time to reform and rehabilitate youth with the assistance of society, and lead them to a good righteous life. Parents must closely monitor the growth of their children to adulthood. We should not cause harm or pain to others.

Lovers of Cricket at one time he was the admirer of several cricketing fans and now that he has repeated blunders to his reputation I don't see a single kind word spoken of him to bring solace to a troubled soul but talking of rape and other charges for some act done to some prostitute who would have had many men. Whilst not condoning his behaviour some advice to those well wishers/relations to engage a Lady Barrister at Law of African origin as she has a clearer understanding and she can obtain a retrieve/relief of sentence. Local or Australian lawyers will not be able convince the Judges. Specially this sports celebrity is dealing with a prostitute who may have had preconceived intentions consenting consensual sex as a Prostitute but not advising the offender of a condom giving sufficient notice. But when the act was to be performed noticing him of this requirement and at that moment man's behavior can change. Deputy Superintendent Jane Doherty has elucidated information.

Why did he bother to get on tinder when there are plenty of legal brothels in Australia and or prostitutes working on their own for themselves who patronise pubs, clubs, hotels and shopping centres. DG is a repeated offender and should be admitted into a overseas rehab centre, but then again a jail term may bring him to his senses. I am made to understand from comments above that he has a wife, my heart goes out to the woman time to ditch the man and move on with her life. As for the woman, we still do not know the whole truth but it will come out into the open sooner or later. I also read above a comment that this woman is a hooker and to take a man back to her home means she may have been a private sole operator. Let's wait to what the outcome is when the courts make their final ruling. Last but not the least, the Cricket Board Official and or Officials who selected DG after being FULLY aware of his past should resign or be sacked, also DG should banned for LIFE.

If this player can roam around freely whilst the tournament matches are in progress , can’t he be meeting bookies also ? Was he kept by the management as communication link ? Certainly his on the field performance will not justify a place in the squad, why he was so favored by the Management ? Besides if he was recovering from an injury, shan’t he be kept under observation/watch by the team management/Physiotherapy unit ?

How come this guy was kept on tour when he was officially replaced with the approval of ICC How a player on tour allowed to leave the team hotel and roam around freely ? If the player is recovering from injury and kept on tour , how on earth he had been leaving the team , team hotel , ground ect and engage with people and visit places / pubs as if he is on a private tour - what the team manager , team captain had done ? Investigate how this non-performing player was selected to the team in the first-place and his association with bookies !

Sri lanka always in this situation because rules are not followed. All ways court orders are not followed. When will these people learn. Due to corrupt politicians they rules of the country is in disarray. They put the biggest thieves to run the country. Sri lankan cricket no better after corruption entered late 90s. Shame shame. Destroy many good cricketers who played in south Africa but man with many rape cases and disciplinary wrong doing is playing in the side. Shame shame...

I believe that the management is equally responsible for this issue. Even otherwise, others too had been partying, God only knows what they were up to! I think the minster and CB have to have an independent inquiry and sack the management !

Obviously we must hear both sides of the story before concluding anything. Dhanushka seems to have a bad reputation when it comes to women. Being a sportsman he obviously will have high drive for physical needs. Most of these woman are not in his room or with him in their homes for a chit chat or innocently. This is a lesson for every young man. Meet in a public place if you don't know the woman. If you want intimacy then get a wife.

Many of the comments are attacking the institutions of our paradise. What the authors appear not to understand is we allowed our institutions to fail by not objecting when they were being misused to subjugate sections of our population

Halangoda is the main person behind this incident, he who arranged Gunathilake (the fool) to act, but Halangalda earned so many Eeros from this deal.

The team management on tour should be sacked immediately. How comes a player can go outside the hotel freely if there was an effective management in place? With regard to the cricketer, not to worry. The Australian authorities will look him after for the next 4 years at least.

Humpty Danushky had a great fall Monday, 07 November 2022 05:05 PM
What would have happened if the player concerned was one Jeffery Vandersay? The Sinhalese would have rioted in Colombo and burned all homes belonging to Burghers. Thankfully, it's a Sinhalese player (D. Gonna-tilleke), so they need to eat the humble pie and put the tail between their legs. Sinhala pride goes before a disgraceful fall.

Some comments ask why authorities kept him so long as a passenger after injury. This cricketer's previous behavior falls in line with Rajapaksha politics that trust and prolong such men and women for Asian wonders. Next time they will 'hit the cup' without going thru qualifying stage. If you don't agree, do unarmed aragala for a full turnaround in all sectors of the country under a just leadership.

I see so much condemnation here. Those who point their accusing finger at Danuska ought to look at their own lifestyles over the years carried out their sins discretely behind closed doors, it’s just that you didn't get caught. To be fair by Danuska, he is innocent until proven guilty. Remember sexual immorality, adultery, fornication, deceit, lies, pride, haters, slanderers, murder …. If you are free of all this, cast the first stone

The captain, the management who went with the team, selection committee and SLC officials are directly responsible for this ugly incident. It's their duty to maintain decipline. They too need to face an inquiry.

This is a common sex scam in Australia. S L C must educate the boys as the Law is archaic and does not keep abreast of the Digital era. Verdict is usually guilty in this instance.

Action should be taken not to the cricketer, for those who kept him at down under after found not fit to play the rest of the matches due to his injury. He should have been immediately returned to SL.

Sack the management who turned a blind eye to such repeated behaviours. They are responsible for dragging Sri Lanka in the mud - this is front page global news There should be an investigation as to why this individual continued to be in the team.

While all should be presumed innocent until proven guilty, SLC should stay away from any active involvement in the case and in fact assist the investigation without limitation. Our interest is not to protect one person but to protect the rest of the team, youngsters who look up to such ppl as role models and the entire SL as a nation. If Dhanushka is proven guilty, he should be banned from all forms of cricket in the future - we should have zero tolerance on such barbaric acts. At the same time if he is innocent, SLC should counter sue the complainant to it's maximum ability to clear Dhanushka's name and reputation.

Our interest is not in anyway to protect the lying white woman! The lying woman has made up these terrible allegations, most likely for getting lots of money. Woman well known to do these tricks to get money which they can otherwise can never get by honest earning. SLC is as it should along with Sri Lankan government funding for the case. SLC staff have made statements available they already see they can win the case they are funding for.
