Danushka to file case to recover legal fees
I expect to claim compensation from the Australian State.
Sri Lankan cricketer Danushka Gunathilaka who was acquitted of rape charges by an Australian Court last week, yesterday said he respected everyone’s freedom of expression, in relation to those who accused and passed judgement on him on social media.

“I’m still 32 years old,” the batsman said, speaking to the media upon his return to the island at the Bandaranaike International Airport, last morning. Gunathilaka said that while he is sad to have missed opportunities to play in the Asia Cup and the Cricket World Cup, he is hopeful of returning to the game which he believes prepared him well for his personal trials.
Q What do you think about the situation you experienced and the outcome?
A: Several Sri Lankans and even the Cricket Board had given me moral support and I am very grateful to them. They trusted me and helped me over the last 10-11 months.
QLocal and international organizations, and social media accused you and passed judgments even before the court ruling. Now that you have been acquitted, what do you think about it?
A: Everyone has the right of expression. I am not concerned about the expression of their views. It is their right and I respect it.
QWhat are your future plans?
A: I will continue playing cricket and start practices soon in consultation with my manager.
Q The Minister has said that you will be allowed to return to the field subject to conditions. What are your comments in this regard?
A:I am not aware what the minister meant to say. I will carry on practicing.
Q Will you continue to play, subject to his conditions?
A. I do not know what conditions he has. I must know them before making a decision.
Q How did you handle the pressure you felt during the situation you faced?
A: It was nothing much. As a cricketer I had the strength to put up with that pressure. An athlete has the strength and courage to face any dire circumstances.
Q You lost the opportunity to play for the Asian Cup and the World Cup. Are you worried about it?
A: It is sad, but I still have a lot of cricket ahead of me. I am still 32 years old.

Q Will you file legal action against that woman and claim compensation for her allegations?
A: It is unfortunate and it is not possible to do so. However, I expect to claim compensation from the Australian State.
