Deadline for Presidential Election cash deposits ends; 40 candidates

Colombo, August 14 (Daily Mirror) - The window for placing cash deposits for the upcoming presidential election closed today at 12 noon.

As of this morning, 40 candidates had made their deposits.

With this deadline passed, the election process moves into its next phase. Tomorrow, the official nominations of candidates will be accepted between 9 am and 11 am.

This brief two-hour window will confirm the final list of individuals who will be on the ballot for the presidential race.

Shows the critical failure of the legislature and political parties for over 3 decades in curtailing the proxy and publicity seeking candidates . Burden of carrying the excess luggage is as usual on the tax payers. Though Dulles did suggest at the last minute to increase the deposits as a deterrent, it was too late.

So 2 hours gives 120 minutes. If there are 40 nominations to accept, each candidate nomination will need to be processed in 3 minutes. It's going to be a very efficient public services in the Election Commissioners office. Hope the same complaint as last time wont come up in that they were rushed.

This is a waste , every Tom dick and harry can pay Rs 50000 to become a candidate and this should be stopped by increasing the deposit to Rs 500000/. Now we go to struggle with the ballot paper to find the mark Malimawa .

The deposit should be increased to Rs 100 million. It should be forfeited if the candidate cannot obtain 5% of the votes. These guys have enough money to pay for it. I think there are 36 mentally retarded persons in this group of 40 as I can see that only Ranil, Sajith , AKD and Namal will get more than 100 K votes. The rest are suffering with dementia too.

A deposit of Rs. 50,000 is insignificant. As mentioned earlier, it seems that everyone is eager to pay this amount without much consideration. The presidential election is a sensitive and serious matter, and Parliament should take strict measures by increasing the deposit to five million rupees or more. It's concerning how long the Election Department will continue to operate this burdensome manual system without adopting state-of-the-art technology. They should introduce smart electronic voting machines EVM in every polling booth, allowing data to be transferred to high-end servers for instant, detailed results. This approach would eliminate paper usage and significantly reduce costs.

Please for God sake for nominations, if the candidate doesn’t have a degree or at least an A Level, see that he be given a general knowledge paper to qualify. It will be great if the answer script be circulated and the voters can make a final decision before they vote.

IF THERE WERE 40 APPLICANTS FOR A JOB AS A CLERK, PEON OR CLEANER IN THE PARLIAMENT ONE WOULD UNDERSTAND. IT APPEARS THIS WAS A WELL PLANNED MOVE WHICH WILL TOTALLY CONFUSE THE VOTER WHEN MARKING HIS/HER BALLOT PAPER, ESPECIALLY WITH THE 2ND AND 3RD PLACES, IF THEY DO NOT UNDERSTAND HOW THE SELECTION/ SYSTEM WORKS. CORRUPTION WILL CONTINUE TO THRIVE WITH THIS GOVERNMENT, IF BRIBES CAN BE OFFERED, MANY MORE HAVE CHANGED HANDS AND GOT AWAY SCOT FREE, UNLESS IT IS REPORTED.
