Definite salary increase for government employees by next year: Deputy Minister

Colombo, December 26 (Daily Mirror) - There will be a definite salary increase for government sector employees, including teachers, by next year, Deputy Minister of Economic Development Anil Jayantha Fernando said.

Addressing the media, he said that the full details of the salary increments will be included in the 2025 budget proposals.

"We are working to increase the salaries of state employees not for political gain, but because everyone knows that people are facing significant hardships with the current economic situation in the country. The existing salaries are insufficient," he explained.

Fernando also said that a salary increase is an urgent necessity.

"As we all know, the country's economy was severely damaged by the previous government. As a responsible administration, we cannot simply tell people to tighten their belts and wait until 2026. We are not taking such an approach," he said.

"Therefore, people can hold onto the hope of a definite salary increase by next year," Fernando added.

we do not see a long-term national development policy framework behind any of the activities carried out by the government. Just continue with the previous government's activities. In fact, this government does not have a vision for the economy. They just talk to media without having any clear-cut plan in mind. One could see this reality in the upcoming budget. Simply, this government is heading without a head. Lack of knowledge is the biggest issue faced by this government.

Instead look for a way so that all benefits. With this foolish strategy the pvt sector woks hard to pay majority of useless and less productive gov sector. Next aragalaya should come to send home the majority of not working gov sector people not politicians.

Does effect all those hardships only to state employees ? Tax on Pensioners FD increased from 5 to 10%, compensating PAYE reduction.

In order to be able to finance this, all people who have got a job as a result of political influence and who in most cases have no earthly qualifications should be dismissed without compensation. I think that this would be 40 to 50 per cent of government employees. The remaining employees are quite sufficient to keep the state administration running. However, promotions and salary increases should no longer be based on seniority, but on performance.
