Colombo, September 15 (Daily Mirror)- The Constitution has provisions for the new President to rule the country if Parliament is dissolved by President Ranil Wickremesinghe soon after the Presidential election on September 21 as speculated, president's counsel Upul Kumarapperuma said while claiming that it could create detrimental repercussions to the people and the country.
He told a National People's Power (NPP) media conference that however, power transmission to a new President elected within the democratic framework should take place democratically without causing negative effects to the people.
He made these remarks while responding to a question that speculations are rife that the President would dissolve Parliament on September 21, just after the Presidential election as hinted by the Prime Minister.
Kumarapperuma said the President has powers in terms of the Constitution to dissolve Parliament at any time and said if he does so at this juncture, it would be the most unscrupulous thing to do.
"The President can dissolve Parliament at any time in terms of the Constitution. There are several provisions for the new President to follow in such a scenario. However, it could create serious repercussions. Power should be transmitted democratically to the newly elected President. People should not be affected negatively by it. If the President dissolves Parliament in that manner, it will be the most unscrupulous thing he will do to the people and the country," he said.

I do not think Ranil will do that because by doing that he is not going to gain anything. If he wins he can do that. But his winning is impossible at this stage. I would suggest considering his old age he should retire peacefully and live a life.

I have heard answering a question President Ranil saying if he lose the election he will return to Plan B. He did not say what Plan B is. Plan B could be to dissolve Parliament. What can the people expect from a rogue elephant?

Plan B is a repeat of 2022. When your icon mess up in big style and everyone run away. Personally my wish is that RW doesn’t go for plan B and let the people suffer!

A lame-duck President having being defeated squarely and roundly at the election will capitalize fully with the powers vested upon him in the Constitution to dissolve the Parliament to create a constitutional crisis and chaos in the country as a last-ditch attempt to portray himself as a cardboard hero only to be vanished in thin air with all his cohorts and cronies before they are hunted by the people to be packed for the export market.

Who is this idiotic lawyer. Why should Ranil dissolve the parliament. He is a Democrat and well respected liberal piton the world. Who tried to burn down the parliament during the Aragalaya. Who introduced the terror in Sri Lanka. Don’t you remember 1971 and 88/89 insurrections. What a stupid and uneducated third class lawyer is this this bugger

I don't think Ranil is a Democrat. Are you sure he's a dual citizen? And FYI, he's definitely "a JR calibre" democrat. Hope you'd understand.

Tyres were, of course, by Tyre Preme, but JVP, especially their armed wing, wasn’t innocent either, adding their own share of terror, violence, and killings. I guess it was an 85/15 affair.

How did you get know my educational qualification? Thanks for your cheap comment. Do you know that I spent best part of my life in jail in 1971 because my affiliation to JVP. I took part in attacking police station with gal katas and bombs which were never exploded. Please do not tell me about these so called undemocratic revolutionaries. Fortunately, I left Sri Lanka to England in 70s for the further studies. Most of the young men who were members of the JVP not fortunate as me. I am very sorry for 100,000 of young men who sacrificed their lives for this unfortunate cause since 1971. Who is responsible for this massacre? In my opinion these so-called communist thugs took the control of trade and student unions in Sri Lanka from the democratic socialist left parties (Sama Samaja party and communist party) and ruined the economy and the education in this country by organising strikes against the foreign investments.

If we go by the constitution, Ranil has every right to dissolve parliament. Is it the gentlemanly thing to do? certainly not. It’s similar to Mankad rule in cricket. Hope sanity prevails for the sake of the people.

Well said. Some express opinions in a childish way. Just look at the many predictions made on the IMF bailout. Everything proved wrong and SL WAS granted the lifeline.

That's rich to say Ranil is a Democrat and well respected liberal person the world. Is that why he did not appoint an IGP in spite of a SC ruling. Didn't he try everything skirting the fringes of the law to delay the Presidential election. Isn't he doing everything on the fringes of the EC guidelines to get unfair advantage by giving so many benefits in two weeks which he said will take six months to give.

JAYANTHA, SORRY TO HEAR YOUR STORY, YOU GOT INVOLVED WITH THE JVP, DID THE CRIMES AND YOU HAVE DONE YOUR TIME. GLAD YOU HAVE GONE ABROAD AND SOUGHT GREENER PASTURES. WE KNOW YOU MAY BE HAVING HATRED TOWARDS THE JVP, BUT YOU JOINED THEM ON YOUR OWN FREE WILL, MADE MISTAKES AND NOW OBVIOUSLY A CHANGED MAN. SO WHY NOT GIVE THE BENEFIT OF THE DOUBT TO ANURA/NPP, SOME PEOPLE DO CHANGE FOR THE BETTER AND SOME DO NOT.

I joined JVP because they brainwashed us. We believed them because we didn’t have TV and our English was poor. We were forced to attack the police stations by our leaders. They haven’t changed. They have been celebrating “il samarum” every year in November. They carry placards of Karl Marks, Fredrick Engels and Lenin during May Day rallies. Are you telling me to trust them. You must be joking

Jayantha if you want to live in the past, that is your prerogative. I know a few more in the same circumstances, but don’t say “poor me”, all young people at the time did not join JVP, you had you reasons for doing so, AT THE TIME. Now, think about the people who have been brainwashed by crony capitalism, abuse of power, murder and thuggery etc espoused by both sides of past leaders. It is indeed a calamity for SL, which needs to end next weekend.

@Jayantha, 90% of the surviving JVPs are against JVP now as they realised it was foolish long time ago. But JVP talks are designed to convince even hard core rightists. I still think JVP has no chance even this time.

These NPP lackey's are so full of it as though they are actually going to win, or have already won. The bottom line is that they simply will not win and their underlying strength and extent of hot air will be on public display next week, and it will be their last hurrah and the nail in their coffin.

Be patient man, just a week to go, you can hide then. Last hurrah, is that a joke? What are the “hurrahs” that they NPP, have had so far? Oh, you’re talking about their excellent policy frameworks, are you simply overwhelmed by them? Cool down, you’re not alone, lots seem unable to come to grips with their smart ways of operating!!! It’s a new era man.

JVP/NPP marketing tactics! Sunday, 15 September 2024 06:21 PM
It was AKD who said in public that he will dissolve Parliament , when somebody pointed that JVP has only three MPs. He also said that he will call for general election after 6 weeks. Now who is the mental patient who is trying to convey that Ranil said this? One thing for sure. NPP has a very busy Marketing team who try to give new meanings to every word uttered by its leaders - even changing the owner of the saying.

Foot note Monday, 16 September 2024 09:34 AM
All major contestants are not new and only want power. That is why 40% of the voters are still undecided. With this frog political climax, they all have cross-party connections openly or secretly and anything possible for their safety, not for the good of the country. There will be a change but nothing new when recalling the Promiss to punish the corrupt ones bringing to Galle-Face and abolish executive presidency by Podu-Peramuna and it's red allays. Still they are promising the same thing and want people to believe them when country is in ruin.

"I still believe Ranil Wickremesinghe will win, although not by a landslide margin like Gotabaya Rajapaksa's previous victory. The upcoming general election will be a fierce battle, and I believe that no single party will secure a majority to form a government. This will likely result in a weak and fragmented coalition government."

The fundamental flaw in Srilankan politics since independence. The first thing they did immeadiately after independence is to defranchise the so called Indian Tamils. Even though they contributed for nearly half of the then GDP. Galoya (Pattipalai Aaru_ changed to Gal Oya)project was commissioned. People, mainly Tamils were removed to pave way for people from other areas ( Sinhalese )were brought and given land. Followed by Sinhala only in 1956. Then came 1958 communal riots..followed by more riots in 1961,1971,1981. Then came the state sponcered communal riots in 77 culminated by the 83 riots. Standardisation and the 77 riots forced the Tamils ( the youth) to loose confidence in their own leaders and paved way for the militant groups. 83 riots fueled the growth of the militant group. Then India was not happy with JR so brought in IPKF. downfall of SriLanka from the best performing ecconomy in southeast asia at independence to the worst performing economy . Two nations in SL need
