Colombo, December 10 (Daily Mirror) - The government has approved the issuing of digital driving licenses to replace the current ones, Cabinet spokesman and Minister Nalinda Jayatissa said.

Addressing the media, he stated that the government recognises the need for digital driving licenses, similar to those used in other countries.

The new licenses will be introduced soon, but the issuing of the existing licenses will continue for a short period until the digital system is fully implemented, he added.

It has been 15 years since the introduction of the initial digital driving license system.

The majority of our drivers wouldn’t have a clue about road rules. The entire system needs to be revamped with tougher laws and penalties for speed violations.

With this new smart license, you won't believe how smart our drivers would be overnight! In two or three years, road accidents would be something only in the books like the dinosaurs! Zero! Gone! Nada! EXTINCT!

In other countries, police don't take your driving license if you make a traffic violation. Police issue a fine or send a fine via mail. If you want to stay in line with other countries do it right or don't do it.

In the past 50 years we changed and or obtained new licenses a few times. Every time I believe some one made money. I wonder if the change that is to come too is similar. This must stop.

Not criticizing by practically this is what happens most of the time.... Say something coming soon... and then court order will come to hold it... then due to cards not ordered on time, another queue... what non-sense. If you are saying something coming soon, all the arrangements must be made and ready. Not just early news to make the people happy..

Digital licenses meaning someone or group of people benefitting from this deal who? Why this move hurriedly introduced when people are struggling to obtain passport for living. Have we forgotten the economic crisis we had just 2 years prior and has the country significantly progressed above poverty level. We feel the priorities are missed. By way of digitalizing the driving licenses can the hidden/stolen monies be found. Questions to ask
