Discussions with govt fails, teachers, principals continue

Due to the failure of the discussions held with the Education Minister, the teachers and principals trade unions have decided to continue with their strike action, Ceylon's Teachers' Services Unions (CTSU) General Secretary Mahinda Jayasinghe said.

He told the Daily Mirror that the minister did not like to expose the details discussed at the cabinet meeting.

However, not a single demand was fulfilled following discussions with the minister, he said.

Also said that the Minister assured to put another cabinet paper for the next cabinet meeting, he said.

Therefore, the trade unions today have decided to continue to refrain from online teaching practices, Mr Jayasinghe added. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)

This government is protecting family rule at the expense of people. So, please do protest till you get your rights. government is almost bankrupt and yet it is not your fault. Teachers are backbone of modern economy. Let MPS know that now. Do not give up and fight for your rights. it has been a long time for teachers pay rise. They give MPS pay rise many times and yet, not for civil servants. One by one each department should come out.

These teachers should be grateful that their jobs are secured and they get 100% of the pay, unlike the hundreds of thousands of employees in the private sector that either faced job losses or salary reductions during the pandemic despite earning much less than these protesting greedy teachers.

Looking at some of the comments here, I'm saddened that people are so judgemental. I'm sure they have no idea as to how little a teacher earns on average per month. They have to conduct online classes and pay for the data costs from the peanuts they earn. Stop finding fault with teachers and instead, point fingers at the government, because very soon, your earnings will also be stolen by the corrupt ministers.

If these teachers are doing a OK job why tuition classes. No country in the world has this tuition craze. Our kids don't have time for sports. We are creating a weak society with poor physicality and education is no better.. Drastic system changes are required but they are political suicide so no one doing anything..

Government is going through a difficult time due to Covid. This is not a good time to make demands and continue with strikes because Delta variant. Government is continue paying their salaries. So, if they want Government to agree with their conditions, that is fine but the implementation will take time. Both parties should compromise.

Teachers are greedy and All what they ask is to increase their salary with inflation rate and with a decent wage to live on. Every things is gone up but not teachers salary . Look at university staff they get many time more salaries than teachers. compare with many other departments; in Sri Lanka we give less salary than Maldives or any Asian countries . So please do not give up til this old man ( minster of education ) give us something thing as he has been saying it for some time. He knows that well

Most of the people talking the stoppage of the on line classes. The online classes started by the teachers by Volunteer without any basic support from the government. What are support government has given to the teachers for this. ( Phone, Data Package?) nothing. Some time back Education minister him self realized, that on line classes is not very Successful. If a rural family having 3 kids can they afford to buy 3 smart phones for them. In city whoever can afford to buy Phone, TAB, Laptop they buy and give to kids. My own experience my kids school teachers started classes early morning 5.00 am and its go on till night. For difference subjects. This doss not mean everybody and afford to provide the facility to their kids. Rather than fighting government should find good solution for this issues .
