Doctors to begin strike against suspension of DAT allowance

Colombo, Jan 23 (Daily Mirror) - The government doctors, including specialists, are set to initiate an indefinite strike starting at 8 am tomorrow in protest of the suspension of the increment to the Disturbance, Availability, and Transport (DAT) allowance.

The Health Ministry, responsible for overseeing these allowances, confirmed the suspension decision.

Previously, the DAT allowance was raised from Rs. 35,000 to Rs. 70,000 following the government's approval of the President's proposal.

Despite the earlier announcement of the allowance increase, the Ministry clarified that the elevated amount of Rs. 35,000 would be suspended in accordance with the Treasury's directive.

This unexpected turn of events has fueled dissatisfaction among government doctors, leading them to call for an indefinite strike beginning tomorrow morning.

Please advertise for some Russian qualified doctors, we can get them for half price without DAT. They are only half as good but it's better than no doctors.

The authorities should have far-sighted policies and anticipated that if the allowance of one selected sector is increased, definitely the other affected sectors in the government would clamour for it and failing which they strike crippling all sectors.

100% of Doctors do private practice and earn a significant amount of money most of which are mot declared for income tax purposes. On top of this, they strike when their additional allowance was suspended. Most of these Doctors were JVP members while they were in the Universities but after getting married and earning good money and live a comfortable life they are even worse than the capitalists.
