Doctors urge parents to supervise children amid surge in fireworks

Colombo,December 30 (Daily Mirror) -Health authorities are urging parents to exercise extra caution with their children, especially when handling firecrackers, due to a noticeable increase in firework-related injuries.

Dr. Deepal Perera, a specialist at Lady Ridgeway Children's Hospital, spoke with the Daily Mirror, stressing the importance of preventing intoxicated parents from driving to avoid potential accidents.

Reports indicate a rise in motor accidents, domestic incidents and alcohol-related accidents. Authorities emphasize the need for heightened awareness and the implementation of safety measures to prevent such incidents.

Furthermore, Dr. Perera highlighted the importance of preventing children from swimming in dangerous areas, such as rivers and seas, to avoid potential accidents.

Isn’t lighting crackers to herald New Year anachronistic! Isn’t it a waste of money to light crackers to welcome the New Year? Aren’t we contributing to noise pollution? How about the terror caused to the small babies and even animals because of the terrible sound that emanates when we lit crackers? How about children getting very badly injured because of these explosives and getting hospitalized? What about the cost of treatment for same? It’s time we use this money to feed the poor or to give it to some orphanage? It will be more meritorious to start the New Year without wasting money when the country is going through an economic crisis and the cost of living is soaring day by day. Mohamed Zahran Colombo
