Drunk train driver abandons Colombo-Kandy train

The driver of a Colombo to Kandy train, who was reportedly intoxicated and agitated, abruptly stopped the train at Suduhumpola near the Kandy city and fled the scene.

Passengers pursued and apprehended the driver, who was then handed over to the Railway Security Department.

A senior officer of the Railway Security Department confirmed that the incident was reported to the General Manager of Railways by the passengers.

The Rail Transport Superintendent of Nawalapitiya was also informed, and further investigations are underway by the Railway Security Division.

The incident has left passengers of the Colombo to Kandy train concerned.

What a mess. No discipline in Sri Lanka. Thank God there was no disaster. The driver if intoxicated should be dismissed with no pension entitlement.

These train drivers are always drunk and one of the reasons for the train elephant collision. Intoxication makes the engine driver being in control of the speed limits to out of control situation, lack of consciousness after alcohol that contributes to many derailments of many trains. There should be strict policy of random breathalyzer tests for these drivers who are in passenger transportation. Employment termination is made mandatory when fails a breathalyzer test.

Breathalyzer tests should be regular, one before starting a journey and one at the end of the journey, Because of the large number of lives at stake. I don't think it is too costly for the railway department to buy.

The drunk train driver did the right thing, if he continued driving there could have been a fatal accident and many lives lost but now only he will loose his job.

Being intoxicated his senses would have given him a Red Signal that the consumption has dropped drastically and that's why he would have scooted out deserting the train to refill the required amount!!!!

Wonder why he abandoned the train with just a kilometre before the destination. Was he worried that he might not be able to bring the train to a controlled stop at the end of the line, which would cause unimaginable disaster? In any case, intoxicated people like him shouldn't be allowed near any vehicle.
