Drunken traffic cop gets lesson on traffic law

A complaint was filed against a drunken traffic policeman in uniform who had knocked down a man on the pedestrian crossing on the Colombo-Negombo main road and had fled away.

Despite being under heavy influence of liquor, the traffic policeman had allegedly attempted to defend his actions with the protesting crowd and a priest from the Mattumagala church. The priest who refuted the policeman’s explanation explained the gravity of the offense he had committed.

The injured man, who suffered fractures to his hand and leg, was promptly taken to the Colombo North Teaching Hospital, Ragama for urgent medical attention. Following the incident, the traffic policeman had fled the scene in a three-wheeler even without looking into the injuries of the person he had knocked down.

The Catholic priest lodged a complaint with the Mahabage Police Station in connection with the incident and to take action against the offence committed by the drunken policeman. (Sheain Fernandopulle)
