E-passports from next year



Colombo, July 17 (Daily Mirror) - The Immigration and Emigration Department today announced the launch of a new, efficient and safe e-passport for Sri Lankans, with effect from January 1, 2025.

In a media release, the Department's Additional Controller General announced that a new passport will be issued according to a new methodology designed to ease the application process for passport applicants.

Accordingly, prior registration links are required on https://www.immigration.gov.lk when applying for Sri Lankan passports, with effect from July 16, 2024. This methodology commences with effect from Friday (19) for the applicants registered on July 16. Therefore, the existing methodology is effective up to tomorrow (18).

Subsequent to registration, opportunities to obtain passports will be received on a priority basis. 

People are informed that there is no possibility of obtaining a passport by visiting the department without a previously assigned date and a time.
