’’Earlier release of Khalida Zia might have allowed Hasina to still be PM’’: President
Colombo, August 06 - President Ranil Wickremesinghe welcomed the recent release of Khalida Zia from prison, noting that this move, had it happened earlier, might have altered the political landscape in Bangladesh.
“If Sheikh Hasina had acted sooner, she might still be Prime Minister today. However, I am hopeful that peace and stability will soon return to Bangladesh,” he added.
Speaking at the Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Summit 2024 held at the Cinnamon Grand Hotel, President Wickremesinghe addressed a range of pressing issues, including the current political climate in Bangladesh, global economic strains, and Sri Lanka’s environmental ambitions.
Addressing the gathering, President Wickremesinghe expressed concern over the ongoing turmoil in Bangladesh, a nation he described as being in a precarious state. “Let’s hope there’s tranquility in Bangladesh,” he urged. “While I don’t want to delve deeply into the politics of our friendly neighbor, the situation there was bound to erupt at some point. Despite Sheikh Hasina no longer being in power, I recall her critical support to us when we were in dire need of funds—she provided $200 million, which was a significant help. It’s only fair to acknowledge her contribution during such challenging times.”
