Education Ministry urges university staff to end strike

Colombo, May 28 (Daily Mirror) - The Education Ministry today requested THE university non-academic staff unions to end their ongoing strike, return to work and present their issues to the expert committee appointed by the President.

While issuing a special notice, the Ministry said that a committee had been appointed to investigate into the issues relating to the university non-academic staff salary disparity since 2018.

Therefore, the Ministry requested all university non-academic staff to submit their issues and recommendations to the expert committee without disrupting university services.

Since there is no system to secure funding for this year, the Education Ministry said that the President had advised the Cabinet to appoint an expert committee to study the salary anomalies of all university non-academic staff to provide recommendations, including all solutions and proposals related to these issues in the 2025 budget proposals.

in SL, public sector is already highly bloated. Now everyone is asking for salary increases. This is a bankrupt country. Bloated public service is one of the reasons for bankruptcy. Yet politicians will start putting more and more their cronies into non existant jobs. Then in the school system, the tuition masters keep charging whatever they like from students and parents are happily paying them anything without any question. This country is an utter mess.

Salary disparity since 2018 overlooked. President gives direction to increase daily wages of estate workers to Rs 1700 and wants to deal with the estate employers who fails to increase. The estate workers were not referred to any expert committee. President is discriminating two sets of employees?

There are no seviour issues to government or non academic staffs but only the university students are seriously affected by this strike and staffs must end the strike action as soon as possible considering the students' education and their future
