Election Commission notified of vacancy in parliamentary seat

Parliament, Jan. 26 (Daily Mirror)- The Parliament has informed the Chairman of the Election Commission in a letter that a Parliamentary seat has fallen vacant from 25 January 2024, following the demise of Puttalam District Member of Parliament Sanath Nishantha, the Parliament Media Division said.

The Deputy Secretary General of Parliament Chaminda Kularatne has further mentioned that this notification is made in terms of Section 64(1) of the Parliamentary Elections Act No. 1 of 1981. The name of the new members who is to fill the vacancy has to be gazetted by the Election Commission as per the act. The new member can be sworn in once his name is gazetted.

The vacancy created by the demise of the State Minister is to be filled by Jagath Priyankara who represents the Jathika Nidahas Peramuna led by MP Wimal Weerawansa. Accordingly, the government will lose one seat.
