The Colombo High Court today sentenced a former principal of a school in Panadura to eight years in prison after being found guilty of accepting a bribe of Rs. 25,000 to admit a student to grade one in 2008. (Yoshitha Perera)

The best news I have heard for a long time. My brother paid half a million to send his son to a big school and I am furious. This disgusting practice of discrimination of poor kids because the principals have reserved places in the school for those who could afford must be scuttled at whatever the cost. Regardless of any other politician or a public servant not being punished for taking bribes or corruption, school principals must be severely dealt with. The school is the place that lays the foundation for a lot to become a man and that has to be a clean place. You don't want to send your son to a robber's house or a drugstore for day care, do you?
