Expenditure reports of 20 Presidential candidates pending

Colombo, Oct 13 (Daily Mirror) - The deadline for Presidential election candidates to submit their expenditure reports ends today, and only 18 out of the 38 candidates have submitted their election expenditure reports so far.

According to the Election Expenses Regulation Act, reports must be submitted within 21 days of the election's conclusion.

The Election Commission of Sri Lanka (ECSL) has set a final deadline of October 13, 2024, at 3:00 p.m.

Candidates who fail to meet this deadline may face penalties under the Presidential Election Act of 1981, with fines reaching up to Rs. 100,000.

Paying the fine is cheaper than finalising all accounts. The penalty should be that the any recognised party that fail to lodge the account as required is disqualified from putting forward a candidate for future Presidential elections

The EC must name the parties/independent candidates so that the people know how honest they are. There have been instances where bag loads of undeclared currency have been found. Is there a mechanism to ascertain the exactness of income and expenditure? Probably the EC can gain insight from this exercise for forthcoming elections.
