The seasonal influenza is making a return, with an increasing number of cases being reported across the country.

Meanwhile, health experts are urging the public to remain vigilant and seek medical attention if they experience symptoms such as fever, cough or cold.

Consultant Epidemiologist Dr. Chinthana Perera stated that pregnant women who suspect they may have influenza should seek medical advice immediately.

He mentioned that influenza primarily affects children under 5, adults over 65 and individuals with diabetes or cancer.

However, influenza cases have risen during the second week of November, December and January, driven by the colder season.

To control the spread of influenza, it is important to maintain personal hygiene by keeping hands clean and avoiding touching the face or mouth.

According to the World Health Organization, these spikes are typically caused by seasonal epidemics of respiratory pathogens such as influenza, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), human metapneumovirus (hMPV), and mycoplasma pneumoniae.

Recently, there has been concern over hMPV cases in China, with reports suggesting hospitals are overwhelmed. The hMPV, a common respiratory virus, circulates in many countries from winter to spring. While some cases may require hospitalization for bronchitis or pneumonia, most people experience mild cold-like symptoms and recover within a few days.
