FR petitions against IGP’s appointment: Order fixed for July 24

Colombo, July 18 (Daily Mirror) -  The order in respect of nine Fundamental Rights petitions filed challenging the appointment of Deshabandu Tennakoon as the Inspector General of Police was fixed for July 24 by the Supreme Court a short while ago.

Nine petitions had been filed seeking an interim order restraining Deshabandu Tennakoon from discharging the duties and functioning in the office of IGP.

However, IGP Deshabandu Tennakoon and the Attorney General raised objections challenging the maintainability of the petitions and moved Supreme Court to dismiss these petitions in limine.

The hearing into these petitions continued for several days, and therefore with the consent of all parties, the Supreme Court heard these petitions until their conclusion at around 8:50pm.

The Supreme three-judge-bench comprised Justice Yasantha Kodagoda, Justice Achala Wengappuli and Justice Mahinda Samayawardena.

Geoffrey Alagaratnam PC, Upul Jayasuriya PC, Shamil Perera PC, Saliya Pieris PC, Viran Corea PC, Senior Counsel Suren Fernando and Thishya Weragoda appeared for the petitioners. Romesh de Silva PC appeared for IGP Deshabandu Tennakoon, while Senior Additional Solicitor General Nerin Pulle appeared for the Attorney General.
