Finance Ministry Secy. late to attend IMF meeting due to protest: 21 protesters arrested

Twenty-one persons including a Buddhist monk were arrested by the Police and the STF for blocking two entrances to the Finance Ministry and the Presidential Secretariat.

Police said the protesters at the Galle Face Green had blocked two entrances from the Lotus Road to the Finance Ministry and Presidential Secretariat since last night.

The protesters continued to engage in protest this morning blocking both entrances using temporary tents and officials that report to the essential services and duties at the ministry and secretariat and public were affected due to the protest.

Police said due to the protest, the meeting which was to be held this morning with the officials of the IMF by the Treasury Secretary was also interrupted.

It was reported that the secretary to the Finance Ministry had to be escorted out of the Ministry to attend the IMF meeting which took place at the Prime Minister’s office as protestors have blocked both entrance and exit of the Ministry.

Police said four women protesters were also among the arrested.

They would be produced before the Fort Magistrate today.(DSB)

What a joke arresting the citizens who have the right to protest without violence and a valid reason for protesting. What about arresting the President and the family and extended family members who are responsible for the situation the Country is in???. Why not arrest the tribe that has taken the Country back 70 years, confiscate their passports putting a ban on leaving the country, try them in a court of Law and recover ALL the monies, confiscate all properties and business investments they have made especially overseas and bring the monies back into the Country, this will need the help of the governments in the countries they have stashed all the case, moveable and immoveable assets. The President should be ashamed to appeal to countries around the world for help when he and his tribe are fully responsible for the situation the country is in, along with all the individuals who he used to carry out some of the irregularities on oiling their palms. What this protestors expecting ?? Against to IMF or Ranil ? Or need the SL people to suffer more to capture the government. This is the same act when investors visit to SL. We know the who is behind this protests. Entire nation is suffering. But so sad.....!!!!

whats done is done, we need the IMF money whether you like this government or not. Please don't destroy any moves to fix this. Wake up Sri Lankans this problem can't be fixed overnight. Yes, Gotabaya is guilty, but don't destroy any chances we may have to get out of this

If delaying IMF meeting is cause for arrest, pls start with Gota, finance minister, governor of central bank for dragging the country to bankruptcy and grinding the public into the ground.
