Fire breaks out at Steuart hotel in Fort

Colombo , December 5 (Daily Mirror) - A fire erupted at the Steuart hotel in the Colombo Fort area this evening, according to the fire brigade.

An official from the Colombo Fire Brigade told Daily Mirror that the blaze was reported on the seventh floor of the hotel on Chatham Street.

"Twelve fire trucks and 41 officers were dispatched to the scene to bring the fire under control," the official said.

According to the official, several casualties have been reported; however, the exact number is yet to be confirmed.

Among the casualties are foreigners and police personnel.

Authorities are currently assessing the extent of the damage caused by the fire.

This is terrible. Wishing everyone makes a full and speedy recovery. Were there emergency escape plans and fire alarms in the hotel? What about sprinkler systems? Tourists would be interested fo know..

I'm so sorry to learn of this tragedy as my self and family have stayed at this fine hotel several times while visiting in Colombo. May God have mercy on those who lost their lives and those who were injured in the fire.
