First election results to be released by 10 p.m.

The first election results of the 2024 parliamentary elections will be released by 10 p.m. today, Commissioner General of Elections Saman Sri Ratnayake said.

Voting for the election began at 7 a.m. at 13,314 polling centers around the country and will end at 4 p.m.

Counting of the first postal votes will commence at 5 p.m., and all counting will depend on the efficiency of the counting centers.

There are 8,888 candidates running in this election, with 17,140,354 individuals eligible to vote.

However, there may be an influence from the weather in the evening.

Yes, the first results can be given by 10.00 p.m., which is the party count. But you never give it by that time. The preferential count will certainly go on till the following morning.

Wonder whether you realise the immensity in this operation in the co-ordination of the islandwide network and supervision and ensuring of the high level of secrecy. I give a bow and salute the EC and admire even giving first results by 10pm as a tough task.

I fully realize the size of this operation and was in Government service several years back and served as SPO in booth, and also as an ARO in charge of a counting centre. That is where the Govt service work very efficiently. At that time, we as a team finished counting in centre for one electorate (Gampola) and came home by about 1.30 a.m. But I heard the results of Gampola announced only at about 8.00 in the morning. When did the first result in the Presidential election given electorate wise? Was it given by 10.00 p.m.?

Only one counting centre is not an electorate. Since 1.30 a.m. and about 8.00 there would have been much checking and authentication at the EC office, (not only one centre) as only after that are final results released. Once EC says final there is much responsibility on him.

8888 contestants for 225 seats to manage a country with 22 million people and yet non of the governmental institution runs efficiently or make profit. So what are they contesting for? Fill their own pockets and wellbeing of their families? Whereas the general public foot all these expenses of the election. Democracy at its best in this part of the world.
