Floating solar power projects on Mahaweli Authority reservoirs

Colombo, September 13 (Daily Mirror) - The Cabinet has approved a plan to implement floating solar power projects on key reservoirs under the jurisdiction of the Sri Lanka Mahaweli Authority.

The floating solar power projects are set to be developed on three major reservoirs: Randenigala, Moragahakanda, and Kalawewa.

These reservoirs have been identified as prime locations for the projects following feasibility studies conducted by the Mahaweli Authority.

I HOPE ANURA GOES WITH A FINE COMB AND CHECKS ALL THESE SO CALLED SPINS AFTER THE 21ST. FLOATING SOLAR PROJECTS, HAVE THEY WORKED OUT IF THE RESERVOIRS OVERFLOW WHERE WILL THE SOLAR PANELS END UP?. WHO IS THE COMPANY/CONTRACTOR AND WERE TENDERS CALLED FOR?.

Is floating solar power a good idea? It would have detrimental effects on the aquatic life. Without sunlight, there won't be oxygen released by photosynthesis and the water would become anaerobic and not suitable for fish and other aquatic life. It would start stinking due to hydrogen sulphide released by anaerobic bacteria. So, why make a solar power system on water, when there is plenty of arid land? It would be harder to maintain as well, compared to on land.

PV panels on water surface will be another destructive project. The destruction over-weigh the benefits. Solar is a novelty that is only beneficial when used on rooftops and NOT in any other way.

With vast expanses of sun-drenched land available in Sri Lanka's dry zones, why opt for such complex solutions? Solar panel installations on flat terrain are far easier to maintain, providing quick and straightforward access in case of technical issues. Furthermore, the untapped potential of railway station rooftops presents a significant opportunity—transforming each station into a source of revenue generation. This approach seems far more practical and efficient.
