Former Maldives State Minister and 16 others released from case

Colombo, Feb 20 (Daily Mirror) - Former Maldives State Minister of Finance Mohamed Ashmalee and 16 other suspects have been released from the magisterial inquiry relating to the alleged sexual exploitation of a 15-year old girl in 2021.

Colombo Additional Magistrate Keminda Perera ordered the release of 17 suspects including former Maldives State Minister of Finance, former Deputy Chairman of the Mihintale Pradeshiya Sabha and a cardiologist from the magisterial inquiry upon receiving the Attorney General's advice.

The Attorney General has instructed to release these suspects from the case since he does not intend to proceed with legal action against them due to insufficient evidence.

The Police Children and Women's Bureau launched an investigation into the suspects under the Penal Code for procuring an underage girl for prostitution and human trafficking.

In SL, most of the cases are delayed beyond reasonable period and then they close it saying no evidence. What a wonderful technique. Politicians are number one beneficiaries.

How did you take action without evidence at first place.Sounds bit fishy. Was AG paid or bribed? Time to investigate on that.

I too wonder. Always apprehending someone for sometime when obviously it was a crime and later released due to insufficient evidence.

They have been discharged ? Am I correct. Women's bureau must go back on the case on AG's advice and collect the evidence. This is the proper proceedure and not just release. AG need to direct the Women's bureau to further Investigate.

Outrageous. The rich and powerful get away with another serious crime. Home SL these animals should be punished. Lack of eveidence! Means they have threatened this poor traumatised girl and her family so she us too scared to give evidence. They should all be in prison for life- make an example.
