Former VC of Peradeniya University, his son hospitalised

Former Vice Chancellor of the Peradeniya University Prof. Athula Senaratne and his son were hospitalised after they were attacked by a group near his official residence last night, police said.

A group of university students who gathered near the former vice chancellor's residence had attacked and damaged his residence, claiming that his son’s car hit two parked motorcycles and fled.

The police who arrived at the scence had disperesed the group and arrested the VC's son over the accident.

Several persons including former VC’s wife and two other individuals who were in the house, were reported to have been injured during the melee.

Prof. Athula Senaratne, who was injured in the attack, has been admitted to the Peradeniya Hospital while his son undergoing treatment at the Kandy Teaching Hospital under police security.

Peradeniya Police is conducting further investigations.

It is really sad to see..if there was accident police should have right to investigate and take any legal actions...why these students do this ? It is a democratic country and we have all legal procedures to go to court and get justice...I don't know the true nature of accident ..I can't be Judgmental but students must use their common sense and abide by the law of the country

Delusional to say this is democratic country. Suppression and abuse of the population by the unpopular government is the norm, and they fear elections for losing the control of government. Democratic governments have no fear of elections. The laws of this nation are also quite backwards too.

If his son was involved in a hitand run case,then they should loged a complain at police and let them take necessary action. Those who tried to kill the professor and his family members should be arrested and given death sentence. These fellows may be also involved in burning houses and probably addicted to drugs as well.
