Four Police officers arrested over death of remanded suspect in Jaffna

Jaffna, Nov 25 (Daily Mirror) - Four police officers were arrested over the death of an individual held in remand custody at the Jaffna prison.

The victim, a 26-year-old suspect involved in multiple robberies, was initially arrested by the Vaddukoddai Police. He was later remanded by the Mallakam Court.

He was admitted to Jaffna Hospital due to a sudden illness after being sent to the Jaffna Prison. Despite being returned to prison on November 16, the suspect fell ill again on November 19 and succumbed after admission to the Jaffna Hospital's emergency unit.

Forensic medical reports indicated that the injuries on the suspect's body had led to his death.

When the case was taken up before the court on Thursday, the Magistrate ordered to arrest the officers implicated in the incident.

In the 70s , the Police in Jaffna were frequently torturing Tamil youths in police custody. Strangely at that time the head of Jaffna police was a Tamil , Superintendent Sundralingam, an ego maniac and a womaniser. This police harassment led to lot of youths joining Tamil militant groups. Now, if the Jaffna Police restart violence and killings of Tamils then rest assured the Jaffna Tamil youths would start again and hit back with massive force that the police have to flee Jaffna. Don’t Make the Same Mistake Again.

Good start for seeking asylum on the basis of the Police torture and join the so called Tamil diaspora. This was the start in the 1970s when I was a teenager and witnessed it. I am still angry about this against the government for doing nothing to alleviate this menace- torture in custody.

Take my word these Police Officers will be released in few weeks. The case will come up at Courts in 10 years. If they are sentenced then the President of the country at that time pardon them,. This is our banana republic procedure.

Good move. If only the then governments in the 70's and 80's have also followed the law and meted out justice on all such excesses in North East, the militancy that rocked the nation for over 30 years could have been avoided.
