Four arrested for poaching sambhurs

Wildlife authorities nabbed four persons who poached four sambhurs and a mousedeer for meat in the Rantambe sanctuary, the Department of Wildlife Conservation said.

The four carcasses of sambhurs weighed 304 kilos and the mousedeer 1.5 kilos.

Three 12-bore shotguns, two three-wheelers, two live cartridges and an electric torch in possession of the poachers were seized. They were to be produced before the Walapane magistrate.

Poaching wild animals for bush meat is rampant in some areas.
Meanwhile, in a separate incident, four persons who indulged in treasure hunting in the Rawana-Ella sanctuary, were arrested and produced before the Bandarawela magistrate.

In Sri Lanka there is less sambhurs, mousedeer and elephants. People are common and increasing, while the wild life, the true owners of this nation are being exterminated. There should be death penalty for killing rare wildlife as deterrent. The agriculture minister allowing for killing wildlife will soon have poacher claim the leopard was trying to eat the paddy so had to shoot it. And the deer drank water meant for cultivation so had to shoot it.

Poachers within Wild Life Reserves must be shot at sight like in Kenya. Begin this in Yala, Kumana and Wilpattu first to be followed thereafter in other National Parks.

I saw comment about how now poacher will claim mad reasons to kill wild animals. With Minister of Agriculture giving go ahead, poacher can claim they saw animal come towards crop, or drinking in stream later used by farmer. All animals lives now endangers with government go ahead to kill indiscriminately.
