Four including army Major General acquitted in Rathupaswala shooting case

Gampaha, May 17 (Daily Mirror) - The Gampaha High Court Trial-at-Bar acquitted the four accused including a Major General involved in the shooting incident that resulted in the deaths of three individuals and the injury of several others during a protest for clean drinking water in Rathupaswala on August 1, 2013.

Court has ordered the release of the four Sri Lanka army personnel, including a Major General and three soldiers.

The incident took place on August 01, 2013, when army personnel fired upon unarmed villagers in Weliweriya who were protesting against a factory they accused of contaminating their groundwater and demanding access to clean drinking water.

How could the Gampaha High Court Trial-at-Bar do this? There seems no sense in this, and if the laws were interpreted by British or Western judges these killer would not get off free. There is some problem when shooters have no consequences for their wicked action.

High courts and appeal courts are loosing trust among general public. If this case taken to SC, we may see a similar situation to that of DG. So who will pay for the public money wasted by legal entities. AG,Juges at court or police. IMF should look in to this matter as well.
