Colombo, August 20 (Daily Miror) - Four suspects who were produced before the Colombo Chief Magistrate allegedly for disseminating offensive and detrimental accounts on Facebook against Parliamentarian Kavinda Jayewardene, were remanded till August 29.

The four suspects who were arrested by the Kollupitiya Police were produced before Colombo Chief Magistrate Thilina Gamage and it was asserted that the four suspects had consciously disseminated fabricated stories on Facebook against Parliamentarian Kavinda Jayewardene to harm his character and his family’s reputation.

President's Counsel Nalinda Ladduwahetty, appearing with a team of lawyers on behalf of the complainant Jayawardena, told the magistrate that the suspects had disseminated video clips that contained doctored, fabricated and filthy visuals against his client on Facebook in order to harm the reputation and character of his client and family.

Therefore, he pleaded with the magistrate to remand the suspects and to order the police to conduct a proper investigation into the issue.

Police told the magistrate that the first suspect was a coordinating secretary to a Parliamentarian who had produced his official identity to the police and had attempted to influence the Fort Police and the Kollupitiya Police in their investigations.

Police pleaded to remand the suspects as the investigations have not yet been concluded.

The third suspect, making a statement from the dock, told the magistrate that he had made the particular video in the past and sold it to the first suspect. He also said that the first suspect had connived with the second and fourth suspects to release it on social media intentionally to harm the Parliamentarian.

He said that he was not responsible for what the other three suspects had done.

The suspects were remanded till August 29.
