Colombo, August 27 (Daily Mirror) - Former State Minister A.H.M. Fowzie, who pleaded guilty to a corruption case, was sentenced today by the Colombo High Court to a two-year suspended imprisonment.

Colombo High Court Judge Nawaratne Marasinghe suspended the two-year imprisonment for ten years, considering the accused's guilty plea.

The court also imposed a fine of Rs. 400,000 on the accused.

The Bribery Commission filed this corruption case against parliamentarian A.H.M. Fowzie for allegedly causing a Rs.1.07 million unlawful loss to the government by misusing a vehicle belonging to the Disaster Management Centre between 2010 and 2015.

There were corruption against him when he was Mayor of Colombo which was investigated by the new UNP government in 1977. I don't know what happened because he must have crossed over to UNP. He is very good in crossing over at the right time and he is an opportunistic politician. He was Minister of Highways when the Marine Drive was built. That also should be investigated.

An ordinary citizen will be behind bars for any crime. But when it comes to politicians - our legal system always give suspended sentence, why this different treatment? Look at Prasanna Ranathunga, Rajapakse family for destroying our country economy, now Fowzie they all are free and holding high public offices. Why the courts can't give them prison terms? Why different standards?

Quite a number of such MP's are on the Govt side. The President says he has an Efficient and Talented team on his side. It is evident with the no of his players side lined by courts for various reasons, this guy is also a frog who jumps sideways like Thondaman to be in power for perks.
