Gazette confirms payments to tea, rubber plantation workers,but estate managements, plantation associations should agree, should must posses financial viability to implement same. This should not be done to attract voters to vote for Ranil.

The fact that the president of a country has announced to the public an increase of 1700 rupees (5.19 euros!) slave wages per day for plantation workers, or is now implementing this, defies description!!! And now it is being made public in the official gazette!!! Does this man even know under what conditions the "ordinary" person in this country has to work and live! Is this the start of the economic upturn and recovery that he has announced or is this just an election tactic!? A failed president is desperately trying to win votes!!!

Whilst I have no issue with the estate workers getting a daily wage of Rs. 1350/-, my question is what about the other sectors? Government Cabinet approved minimum wage in Sri Lanka (2024) is Rs. 17,500/-. An estate worker gets to receive a monthly salary of Rs. 27,000/- (working for 20 days). What about this disparity? So why this love only for estate community?

To the commentors who argue about labor competitiveness in the international market and the downfall of the industry etc., I doubt any of you would survive more than a few weeks with Rs 1700 income per day. It is unfair to punish workers just because a string of governments have failed to uplift the economy and poverty line. If you truly want to protect the plantation industry from collapse due to uncompetitive costs, reduce top executive level salaries and shareholder dividends.
