Giraffe was killed, not deceased: Zoo union alleges

Colombo, Dec. 9 (Daily Mirror) - The female giraffe at the National Zoological Gardens in Dehiwala died on Thursday (7), However, the President of the Sri Lanka Podujana Zoological Garden Employees’ Union Krishantha Christopher alleges that the animal was killed.

Addressing the media, Krishantha Christopher said that giraffes are classified as critically endangered animals. He mentioned that the giraffes in the Dehiwala Zoo received special attention from the department, symbolized by a spotlight on their conservation efforts.

The union leader said that the giraffe’s death was not a natural death but a result of harm. The demise of this animal represents a significant setback for the Dehiwala Zoo.

“The union has lodged numerous complaints with the ministry, urging the removal of an unqualified veterinary doctor from the Dehiwala zoo to safeguard the well-being of the animals.

Not only is the veterinarian probably not qualified, but neither are the employees. In Germany you need three years of training before you can get a diploma in animal care. This is a requirement in every zoo to work with animals. In Sri Lanka too, such training should be a prerequisite and management should only consist of professionally qualified academics who are not influenced by politics. In addition, the zoo must receive a sufficient budget to cope with the cramped, sometimes frightening conditions in which the animals are kept. The number of visitors must also be limited in this cramped zoo. The move to a larger area must be accelerated. The current situation of the zoo is a disgrace for the country, even if you consider that the zoo was founded by the German zoologist Hagenbeck, whose family still successfully runs the only private zoo in Germany in Hamburg.

This protest is part of on going dispute between different gp. The Giraffe has had its full lifespan under the zoo management and it is not uncommon for old animals to respond differently for medication.

1) All these unions seem to be affiliated to political parties. The name "Sri Lanka Podujana Zoological Garden Employees’ Union" suggests it is affiliated to SLPP. It is a shame unions in SL are politically sided. They are meant for the welfare of the employees without political affiliation. 2) I doubt the claim unqualified veterinary doctor. It is very unlikely that the zoo management would recruit someone without a degree. 3) Drug allergies are difficult to predict.
