Giving lifeblood to people not a violation of human rights: President
Batticaloa, August 24 (Daily Mirror)- Giving life blood and easing their suffering is not a violation of human rights, President Ranil Wickremesinghe said today.
President Wickremesinghe said this in relation to the verdict by the Supreme Court that he has violated human rights by postponing the Local Government elections.
He came out with this remark during a rally in Batticaloa this morning.
"The country would have gone into a worst economic crisis if I haf held the Local Government elections," he added.

Absolutely right! Wonder what su missions the Attorney General had made in this instance. Obviously a very critical point was missed, the fact that the country did not have billions of Rupees to spend on an election during that time. The Petitioner who filed this fundamental rights case was after personal glory and did not want to consider what would have happened if the election was given priority!

Personally I would have wanted by grave living issues addressed rather than that election. Did people want to go to rallies and stand in pooling queue, when they had other queues to stand in for basic household and living necessities? AKD an SP may think otherwise and perhaps explains why they chose to sit back rather than attempt to do anything to alleviate the people's suffering then.

Giving a lifeline is the duty of the President. Blocking LG elections is a violation of human rights. If Ranil honestly wanted to give a lifeline, he had so many opportunities. For example, having a smaller number of ministers, not appointing state ministers, not providing benefits such as security details of 100 plus armed services personnel to former politicians and above all, preventing the ministers from stealing money through bribes and pulling an online visa scandal.

Then the facade collapses. Given the circumstances, we can excuse, and understand the situation. What is inexcusable, however, is a man nearing the end of his life chosing to condone corruption, merely to extend his tenure of office, rather than act in the best interests of the country.
