A constitution itself can't bring in national unity, Cardinal. National unity comes when there is economic development, and its benefits are spread in the society to the widest extent possible. Therefore, regardless of who is in power, the focus must be on rapid economic development. Further, education and good health are paramount. In fact, education and health complement rapid economic progress. Cardinal, you talk everything but spread the message of the God, which is your prime responsibility!

Well said sir. A new constitution abolishing the executive president and the proportional representation need to be done away with. All perks for ex presidents need to be done away with. I vote for the NPP not wanting free food. We need a new society. The clean Sri Lanka is a good start and the momentum should be maintained.

By now most of the constitutional amendments should have been done and put forward for Parliament approval.The Justice ministry should have separate unit ,for recommending constitutional amendments and must act fast. Recruit experienced people from Bar Association to put this right without wasting more time.

It is a misconception that people think constitutions can bring unity. It can never but on the other hand it can lead to division.Your Eminence what are you trying to do? Change the Executive presidency without addressing the ill effects of 13A, 17A and make a de-facto separated country? 75% of the population are Sinhalese while SL Tamils, SL Moors, Indian Tamils are 12%, 9% and 4% respectively. Whatever His Eminence Cardinal has in mind the end game should be to meet the aspirations of the majority without harming the aspirations of others, but not to sacrifice the majority for the benefit other groups. Coming back to the original view which country has achieved unity through constitution. UK, USA, India, Canada, France, China, Russia Germany South Africa , Korea (just to name few) etc etc have achieved nothing through constitution
