Government to act tough on quacks: Health Minister

Parliament, January 07 (Daily Mirror)- Admitting that there are unregistered doctors illegally practicing in the country, Health Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said today the government will take legal action against them and requested people to inform of such individuals.

He told Parliament that some medical practitioners tend to practice medical systems outside the medical system that they are registered with.

Responding to a question by SJB MP Rohana Bandara, he said there are several medical systems operating in the country and that medical practitioners are required to register with the relevant medical councils.

"There are issues in some medical councils. Some medical practitioners are reported to be using medical systems outside the medical systems they are registered with. It is said that there are some 40,000 quacks in the country. I do not think there are so many, but I admit that there are some quacks," he said.

The Minister said raids are being conducted by the Medical Officers of Health (MOHs) on such unregistered practitioners and that legal action had already been taken on some individuals.

He requested the people to inform of individuals who practice without having registered themselves with the relevant medical councils.

The government should also crack down on the fake PhD holders and those who pretend to be SPECIALIST DOCTORS - even those who are amongst their own party members.

I don't support unregistered medical practitioners. But give an example of anyone practicing medicine illegally whose treatments have resulted in deaths or serious injuries to patients. NONE. Medical practice is not rocket science, it is about prescribing drugs made by someone else. Doctors are artificially keeping the profession closed to others. We have to break the control doctors have on clinical medicine. Doctors are no experts, only in paper.

@KP , you don't have any points to counter the argument given by this lady. So you want to insult her. She is highly experienced medical administrator who has seen all about the doctors and strongly feels this profession needs to loose its dominance in hospitals. You must be a frustrated doctor using picked up initials KP and trying your best for the last few years countering this lady .But she has evidence and you have nothing but you keep on insulting like a lunatic. My advice is seek help.

What you say is cent per cent correct for example in the faculty of indigenous medicine, they are taught for 05 years including Antony, Physiology, Gyn and Obs, Paediatrics excluding surgery. They shuold be given separate registration numbers differentiating then with paramparawa veda mhaththayas . Also they are prescribing over the counter medications and as you stated, no harm were reported. If a pharmacy salesman without any medical knowledge could dispense medicines over the counter, why it is denied for the students passed our after 05 years with one year internship. If the University is producing around 500 indigenous medical doctors every year and there are no hospitals for them to find employment . Secondly if they do private practice there are not much patients seeking indigenous medicines.....
