Colombo, April 26 (Daily Mirror) - Ahead of the presidential election, the government has allocated Rs.100 million for each divisional secretariat area for development projects and instructed the ruling party MPs to accelerate implementation of them, Daily Mirror learns.
President Ranil Wickremesinghe called for a meeting of the ruling party legislators on Thursday to discuss the matter since the execution of development projects takes place at a snail’s pace, according to an MP who was present at the meeting.
The government has disbursed such huge allocations for development projects such as the construction of access roads and irrigation canals, obviously targeting the presidential elections. The MP said projects are implemented based on proposals from the village development committees throughout the country. After that, approved proposals are referred to the divisional and district coordinating committees headed by the ruling side MPs for final endorsement for implementation based on allocations.
He said the money had been allocated under the government’s ambitious rural development project ‘Kandukara Dashakaya 2024–2033’ by the Presidential Secretariat.
Under the initial phase, Rs.10 billion has been allocated. It is a project announced in the 2024 budget.

GH…we seem to be in a better place because we reneged on our debt obligations which are accumulated massive interest fees. It has nothing to do with ranil . Even if a beetle nut seller was the president we will be in this position.

Only at Elections Very concern for the People Saturday, 27 April 2024 05:05 PM
@Gh - Don’t be gullible. These politicians created these hardships due to mismanagement over years. People like you have voted them in many times and most are only interested to fatten their and familles wealth. Taking countless loans and currently at USD$60 billion still unpaid. Ranil bought time to stop paying these loans but from next year onwards most loans plus interest will start to be paid. All’s not well yet and these old fellas who have been in power for many decades created this mess and have barely done anything. Mostly getting donations and loans to maintain their luxurious lifestyle and run the government with high monthly expenditures. So 2022 scenario might appear again if these misfits are voted in again.

Loans Accumulating and all Need to Be Paid soon Sunday, 28 April 2024 05:57 AM
@David - at the moment 17IMF loans signed over the years still not paid. Remember those bonds, Japan loans all will start accumulating. All the new loans signed last and this year will need to be paid from next year too. They just paid Bangladeshi’s this year. All will accumulate interest and see your taxes and new loans increase yearly to cover this mess. Don’t forget, the governments high expenditures will add to new loans being taken too. Seems you are shamelessly fine with it as you must have enjoyed free education and now medical etc using these loans.

Don’t Be Brainwashed All’s Well Sunday, 28 April 2024 06:18 AM
@David and Godfather- you guys are shamlessly enjoying every moment when things are free and quiet at the moment. Majority of loans are IMF, ADB, WB and debts are at US$60 billion and counting. Current and past governments never reduces its expenses with huge perks, huge Tri-Forces etc. When taxes increase as it can hardly have reserves as seen over the years, all these problems will reappear next year after elections are forgotten and the whole cycle will starts. You guys seem relaxed and not bothered as you must have funds from other avenues. But majority are living miserably and struggling stressfully and may lead to psychological disorders resulting in other issues for society. Remember, Everything done has consequences.

Country with Never Ending Loans Sunday, 28 April 2024 08:17 AM
@David - u are mentioning except for IMF, ADB, World Bank, all others like bonds etc will be paid in 2028. Majority of loans are from IMF, ADB, World Bank. Up to now, 17 IMF loans are taken and a few more on the way. Sooner or later, all need to be paid. And you and others seem fine with it and live at the moment as so used to the free education, medical etc. Remember There is no free lunch! The trend over the years, take new loans and increase taxes to pay previous loans. But Gota's reduction on taxes and pandemic came. So the rhythm is got derailed and all hell broke up in 2022. So now it’s you and children to get these loans sorted out and seem fine with it.

@ Trooper- some loans overdue paid by increasing taxes and taking up new loans. Can’t people like u understand it’s a never ending cycle and seems acceptable by many so long there is free education, free medical and some occasional handouts. Most politicians enjoying themselves with ez money and perks at their disposal. Those who feel it’s acceptable, do vote them in again and don’t complain and protest later on when taxes and utilities charges are raised.

The reason SL had to face a debt crisis is because of debt mismanagement during yahapalana years. From 2015-19 , Ranil had taken 12.5 billion in ISBs alone. That is the key reason for our bankruptcy

Government Expenditure Too High With International Loans Saturday, 27 April 2024 07:23 PM
Spot on! If only the other voters can see and say the same as your good-self. Many has the impression he has brought the situation under control but seems to have forgotten that he only stopped the repayments of the USD$60 billion loans for 2 to 4 years and managed to get new international loans. From next year onwards, this needs to be repaid with interest and things might be challenging for all. These old fellas brought this economic crisis over the years by over spending and still continuing with this over spending. They must be removed soonest by voting them out.

Election Gimmick- 5th Year End of Term Improvement Saturday, 27 April 2024 08:34 AM
Voters don’t get fooled by these gimmick. Should be done consistently and not on the 5th year of their term. Priority should be to upgrade and replace equipment in hospitals regularly. The ageing population is increasing and health care is not improving.

@ Abraham- you seem an educated person not residing in SL and can easily be hoodwink with free roofing sheets and rice packets just b4 elections. Ranil was chosen by MP’s which citizens so despise due to a constitutional flaw. It’s obvious he’s getting a good pay and perks pkg on condition he doesn’t bother the politicians who brought the country on its knees. Mega corruption and murder cases are still not investigated properly for the courts to determine judgment. People shud understand most politicians are giving sweets now so that once voted in again, will continue their pathetic and disgusting behaviour to enrich themselves and their families. The average person will continue a very miserable and stressful life. Just look at the conditions of the government hospitals and its facilities, transport system, railway stations etc. SL is still in debt to a tune of USD$60 billion and counting as new loans are added yearly due to their high expenditure and having a huge Tri-Forces.

Even a high school kid can run this country, remember the government restructuring the debt and government haven't repaid any loans or repaid any debt for last 3 years!! Begging for money not development or progress. There's no demand for DOLLAR and dollar depreciating but wait till government start repayment of Debt then dollar gonna appreciate again. The economy is an Illusion!! It's Not progress,!!

Most Still Don’t Understand the Gravity of the Situation Sunday, 28 April 2024 06:40 AM
@Dolly, you must be the ones enjoying all the freebies shamelessly like education over the years these politicians are throwing using loans. In your time, there wen’t the Ukraine and Pandemic issues. Ever since these came on board, all hell broke out in SL and around the world. Also, you must be living the good life and having sufficient funds to visit private hospitals and having private vehicles. Unfortunately, majority uses public hospitals and transportation and all need urgent upgrades. But due to the massive loan repayments and huge government expenditure, life for the average person will go on miserably and stressfully for years to come unless a complete overhaul is done in the next elections and having a younger professional team. These current fellas have been in power for many terms and most are not fit to run SL.

The best strategy is to approve as many as project proposals as available. Then allocate a little money to be used at a snail's pace until the election. Then say they can/will be completed only if the President is re-elected. Of course, the projects can be forgotten and not funded after the election.

Readers please remember if not for India through direct financial aid and using its influence with World Bank (Head of World Bank is Indian), IMF (Deputy is Indian and many heads of department) and USA (Vice President is Indian and so many influential Americans of Indian origin) have saved Sri Lanka from bankruptcy. So, our economic recovery is not due to any politician or economist. But the Indian help will be at a price. We have to sell state assets to Indian companies and also shake our head for many things India wants us to do in order to keep Sri Lanka under her sphere of influence. So, major parties which ruled for 76 years are responsible for this.

This is the first time Ranil has got the reins of governance into his hands and from the moment he took over, he has indeed worked round the clock! That is why, we have come out of the crisis so soon. If JVP had taken over, their main task would have been catching rogues and time would be lost in court cases unless they start killing people as they did before! If it was SJB, they would be arguing on policy issues as Sajith is keen on talking more than working! If people cannot understand what is good for the country now, then we will be back to zero soon!
