Govt. considers deporting Rohingya refugees at this point: Minister

Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs Ananda Wijepala told the Daily Mirror that the government is considering on deporting Rohingya refugees who recently arrived in Mullaitivu after following the legal process and discussions.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been in contact with the Myanmar government, and the list of names has already been shared with them. We will follow the legal process, engage in discussions with the Myanmar government, and, at this point, are considering deporting them,” the minister explained.

The minister added that that group of refugees who recently arrived in Mullaitivu will be held there until discussions with authorities conclude.

On December 19, a multi-day trawler carrying 115 people from Rohingya drifted towards the coast of Mullivaikkal in Mullaitivu. The boat had 103 individuals seeking asylum alongside 12 persons who had initiated the journey.

It is Sri Lanka's humanitarian duty to grant asylum to refugees who face persecution and death in their country. Hundreds of thousands of Sri Lankans who were in mortal danger here have been granted asylum worldwide. But even under the new government, this country only thinks of itself.

Why waited this long. Should have sent back immediately. Do it asap. Look at the issues faced by uk, usa, canada and some of the european countries that either come through illegal methods and comes as fake refugees. Recently saw a video where a Palastinian refugee stealing goods in daylight at a uk super market. Because of the hr bullshit at unnecessary level, super market staff member could not use force. He pleaded not to take goods away but that guy walked away with goods. Already the uk is going down drastically with foolish level of hr. HR matters but should have a limit otherwise it can backfire.

How do you figure these folk arrived as "fake refugees"? You think they have money to buy Air Lanka ticket and fly ? Or is it just your sheer ignorance of situation in Myanmar and other places that is talking ? Do you believe SL is a dream destination for anyone ?

I don't think it is the right decision. These people came here on boats, risking their lives, to avoid persecution. Should not be sending them back to Myanmar. Should think of some other option.

As sad and terrible as their situation is this island is currently not in a position to accommodate taking on refugees . It has its own people to look after and a long way to go so that all it’s citizens are in the ok zone. My comment would probably not be welcomed by some but I would vote to send them back .
