Govt mulls countrywide restrictions on private tuition by school teachers

Colombo, January 13 (Daily Mirror) - In the wake of reports about term test papers getting leaked , the Education Ministry mulls the introduction of certain restrictions on school teachers involved in giving private tuition, an official said.

Recently, the year end term- test question paper on the Sinhala language had been leaked by certain teachers for the benefit of children who sought private tuition from them in the North Central Province.

The education authorities of the Western Province had decided earlier to ban the conduct of private tuition by school teachers. However, the gazette notification issued in this regard was revoked immediately.

An official of the Education Ministry told Daily Mirror though the provincial authorities had authority to take such decisions, a common approach should be introduced for the whole country .

"This is an issue warranting a holistic approach. There is a debate whether school teachers should be allowed to provide private tuition for children of their own schools . Parents complain about teachers discriminating children who do not attend their private tuition classes ," he said.

After consulting all stakeholders, the Ministry is now planning to introduce a common criterion on the conduct of tuition classes.
