The government never promised to offer chairmanship of the Committee on Public Accounts (COPA) and Committee on Public Enterprises (COPE) to the Opposition, Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) General Secretary MP Sagara Kariywasam said today.

He told Parliament that the opposition is misleading the country claiming that the government promised to appoint opposition MPs as heads of COPA and COPE.

He said they stressed during the party leaders meeting that heads of COPA and COPE should be appointed in accordance with the Standings Orders.

The MP said it was not mentioned anywhere in the SO that opposition MPs should be chairman of the COPE and COPA.

"Standing Orders 120, 121 and 127.1 clearly state legal provisions with regard to appointing COPE and COPA," he said. (Ajith Siriwardana and Yohan Perera)

Earlier in history, Mr. Jesudasan, a MP from Federal Party was head of COPE committee. He was from the opposition, but he was the only Chartered Accountant in parliament, plus he gained respect of even Prime minister at that time, with his mild manners.

Well they will do a car better job especially as they have less vested interest particularly when looking into wastage and corruption. What is he fearful about? That they will do too good a job?

This is PURELY TO COVER UP CORRUPTION WHICH HAD OCCURED DURING MAHINDA AND GOTA'S PERIOD OF ADMINISTRATION. THE CURRENT GOVERNMENT SHOULD FOLLOW THE PROCEDURES AND LET THE COPE AND THE COPA TO THE OPPOSITIONS TO AUDIT AND FOLLOW ALL CHARGES TO RECOVER AND LET THE JUSTICE PREVAIL. If an opposition MP can appointed as the President of the country, why not as heads of COPE and COPA. The fact of the matter is that you don’t have reliable MPs who can win the confidence of the people.

SJB could not carry out the Chairman roles of COPA or COPE well. Harsha drama queen and want to be president is the show of their incompetence. Weerawansa, Wasudeva, and Gammampila group are generally too ill mannered to handle a level headed job like that. Too much comments against dual-citizen makes them seem out of touch with the reality of the vast Sri Lankan diaspora out there. Dullas faction does have MP Herath who would do a political neutral work for either party. I think JVP might be able to do COPA, but since they are against cut backs to State Owned Enterprises they would be unsuitable for COPE. Maybe TNA MP can do COPE and actually be involved in some real work for a change.
